Laurie still in hospital day 12 . After numerous scans tests and an angiogram they tell us the main aortic valve in his heart is too narrow to pump the blood properly around his body and this has lead to heart failure . The only way to fix the problem requires open heart surgery . After several meetings and " high risk " meetings they have decided that Laurie is too frail and would not survive the surgery as he has too many other issues . They did consider the possibility of trying to open the valve a little by inserting a catheter with a balloon , however it seems this is also too risky for an unguaranteed small result . So sorry mate - nothing we can do for you . He is still on a drip with blood thinners to try and dissolve the blood clots in his lung . Now waiting for vascular doctors to decide what to do about the dry gangrene on his toes .
I do not know how this heart problem has not been diagnosed before now as the symptoms have been evident for some time - shortness of breath , faigue , extreme weight loss etc . - it was always put down to something else .

This doesn't sound good. I hope Laurie is being kept comfortable. I think of you both often and was hoping no news was good news.

Hi Brenda, I'm sorry that the news about Laurie is not better, I hope he is not in any discomfort. It is distressing when it seems like the doctors have no tricks up their sleeves that can fix a serious problem, especially when they're the ones who should have recognized the problem earlier on. This must be a very stressful, frustrating time for you, I hope you are taking care of yourself - eating and resting as necessary.

Poor Laurie. I hope they help him feel comfortable. Does he have pain or trouble breathing? Awful. I'm sorry this is what's happening.
