Trying to qualify for Ripley's over here.
14 years, count them, on hemodialysis!
I made 14 years as of November 2nd, 2012.
Beating the odds still!!!

Good for you, kitkatz! I wonder if that's an IHD record...

Keep beating those odds, Kit. :2thumbsup;

That's awesome.. I don't know if I could make it that long
-
Congrats on 14 years! I think. Glad you're alive. Too bad it has to be on dialysis. You must have good inner strength. (But I don't think it's anywhere close to an IHD record.)

ODDS KITKATZ
You ROCK Kit! I am always amazed that its been so long! Take care my friend! :-*

Three years for me now, kitkatz. I'll get my 14 up when you're getting your 25 year medal!

Wow, 14 months, that's quite a stretch. You get less for murder in some countries! I'm actually celebrating one month in the big chair... with several to follow.
-
kitkatz, congratulations. We all know that to survive on dialysis long term, you have to be durable and tough.
Keep on keepin' on.
-
That is amazing!! Thanks for sharing.

And she Teaches all day! God Bless you Kit........
Your friend ~ Rerun :pray;
-
Congratulations, Kit! You're an inspiration! All the best to you, as always.

As a card-carrying member myself, I hereby nominate Kit at this year's president of the Too-Stubborn-To-Die club. Anyone second the motion?
-
I'll second that! Going on 10 myself.(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-dance004.gif)

How do you join this club anyway?? See, I think I'm in the Too-Friggin-Scared-To-Die Club, cuz I'm afraid that if I were to die, my mother would kill me.. *LOL*
-
Wonderful, Kitkat!! So glad that you continue to make it. :cuddle; And so glad I got to meet you! I am just half your dialysis age!

You self-nominate to get in, of course. Club membership in TSTD is open to anyone who has ever had a doc give them a 50-50 (or worse!) chance of surviving, or who has beaten the statistical averages for life span with a chronic illness. Other reasons for membership are accepted on a case by case basis. For example, I get in on both of the original counts. ;D I know Rerun gets in on the stat averages AND for surviving a plane crash. :o
Stubborn is a good thing!
-
I've second this club as I was told I will not live long by a primary doctor three years on D. Wait until he sees me again. :rofl;
-
hmm.. I survived a fungal infection... the infection almost got me though... does that count?
-
You're still here - you're in!
-
I tell people " I am just to dumb to know any better." when asked the secret to dialysis longevity.
-
Keep up the great job, kitkatz!

-
wow thats great. for me its 3 years now, and my fistula veins are so big. i wonder why.
so whats the difference between dialysis before and now
-
Give me a few days to answer dialysis before and now.
Do you want to know how dialysis changed over the years or changes for me before dialysis and now on dialysis?
-
i want to know how dialysis change over the years since you've started!
i heard some one in other forum that she says she survive dialysis for 3 decades.
dialysis that times takes 15hours per treatment.
if that was true. man can you imagine that,
-
I saw dialysis change over the years too, but I was on PD for most of that time.. HD is still relatively new to me..
When I first started, there was a PD dialysis unit in my hospital. They had the large computerized PD machines (they were state of the art in the early 90s) and people would come in 3 days a week for treatment. They wouldn`t even think of doing that now.
-
Congrats Kit. And ceb3370. I'm now in year 14 after my body destroyed my dad's kidney, and I don't think it has changed much over the last 14 yrs. Apart from some more meds like Sensipar (cinacalcet), renagel (renvela?) etc. But in the 80s when I started D I remember doing 8 hours 2 times a week. Diet was incredibly restricted compared to now. Like half a potato, 4 green beans, and a sliver of meat. Sorry, don't want to think about it anymore.
I don't think Nxstage was around 14 yrs ago. Not in the UK anyway.
take care, and keep fighting the odds.
(NB I don't do clubs, unless they serve rum)
-
Hemodialysis ha snot changed basically. There are newer treatments like nocturnal and home hemodialysis like NX stage now.
Basically it is two needles in the arm for hours at a time, blood removed and cleaned, and returned. Needles removed. Hold and tape up. Go home.
-
Amazing :2thumbsup;
-
I've hit 7 yrs so far... Glad to see you are all doing so well for such a long period of time! Keeps me hoping!
-
Bear is 12+ yrs !!! :thumbup;
-
Can you be completely honest?
How exactly has your body changed since starting hemo? For me, my skin started peeling on hands and feet. A year and a half ago I developed a cough that wont go away. So what is diffrent about your body?

Changes in the body:
Lack of sex drive
Bumps and rashes on skin
Itchiness every now and then
Weight gain over the years
Sluggishness
Moodiness
Arm looks like a shark bit it.
Chest has marks all over from catheters
Hair has thinned a little bit
Hair on the face from the BP meds I used to take.
Dry, dry skin.
Overall I am doing pretty well.
