I havent been here in a while, so hello again all! Glad to see this site is still up and well!
Just a quick question....like the title says, can I do pushups with having a fistula? Is there an issue of strain? I have this image in my mind of it just popping!!

if you dont get the answer you are looking for here, try going on Facebook and looking up Shad Ireland. He has been on dialysis for 30+ years and is a athlete.

Thanks for the replies and helpful links. Yes, my fistula is an upper arm access, and has been in use for almost 4 years now.

If oyu plan on doing weights work with a trainer. I started with a trainer this saturday and I didn't realize i was doing too much weight. He showed me the correct posture to do weight machines and free weights but at a lower weight and the work out felt better less recovery time between and less stiffness. And remember weights x 2 a week will maintain your muscle mass, 3 x a week will increase.

Thanks for the tips Rain. Yeah, after 4 years that Ive been on dialysis, its only now that Im starting to notice loss of muscle mass. I use to be very active before all this started, and pretty much stopped too much physical activity because of the fluid restriction. Now that Im use to the restrictions, I figured I might aswell start again. The nurses at my clinic think its ok to do pushups, they suggested I start from pushing up from a chair and not a full pushup, Ive started doing that. Another thing you pointed out, "recovery time", wow, I never even thought about that before going on dia, but now I understand. lol. Thanks again!

And another tip is to eat plenty of protein, especially after dialysis.
