Title: Flank Pain
Post by: gotmoose on September 27, 2012, 08:48:54 AM
Wanting to know whats good pain medicine for flank pain I'm experiencing. Seems to be almost a daily issue now, especially when I'm working. cant afford to stop work since I'm the insurance carrier in my family. Tylenol doesn't seem to do much. Would love to take ibuprofen, but I know I cant due to my PKD . currently stage 4, GFR 26.

Ask your doctore for some Tylenol with codine.  They helped me they can make you a little tired when first taking them but after a while it's usually not much of a problem.  Besides I would rather be a little tired then in pain.  Best wishes.

every time I had flank pain, it was due to a kidney infection or UTI!

If it's really severe there may be a serious problem. I'd recommend that you get an ultrasound to make sure the blood flow to your kidneys isn't blocked. Flank pain is a normal symptom for my disease (IgA Nephropathy), but before I went on D my neph was worried because my GFR had dropped dramatically after being stable for many years and ordered an ultrasound. Apparently it is quite common in ESRD for blockages to occur, especially if high blood pressure or diabetes is present. In my case I had no blockages and it was just my kidneys finally giving up the ghost, but it's hard to know for sure without an ultrasound.

Ive had the occasional flank pain time to time but anymore it seems once I'm at work and on my feet and working the pain slowly starts and stays with me until I can sit down for some relief or walk around. I work in a factory as a line worker so I cant just walk away when I choose. had to come home early from work tonight due to the pain. I'm calling my neurologist office in am and see what he can do for me. Cant go on like this and work full time, and I need to work since i carry the health insurance. Thanks for all the input

Could be stones or infection. Definitely get it checked out.
Also, pay attention to the positions you're standing and sitting in. May need to adjust that too.  I know with PKD when the kidneys get large some positions are more uncomfortable than others depending on how much space is being taken by them.

called my nephrologists office this am and talked to my Doctors nurse since he was in a different town at another office. She left me a voice mail saying the Nephrologist didn't give me prescription for pain killers and that i should call my primary doctor for that. I mean what the hell. Its a kidney issue! he didn't even suggest seeing me or checking into the pain with other means. Think its time for a new Nephrologist

I have IgA Nephropathy and when I was a stage 3 I experienced flank pain and I told my Nephrologist she said that I shouldn't be having flank pain because of the kidney failure.  I looked online back then and it seems a lot of people were experiencing it.

I have IGM Nephropathy and I too, since state 3 have had the pain. I also told my Nephrologist who told me I shouldn't be having any pain and totally ignored me. IGM, is very similar to IGA. Now that I am on dialysis, I have the pain more than ever. Told my doctor, and again, was ignored. Been thinking he maybe should at least check my urine for infection. He is pretty worthless. I have an appointment with my pcp next week. Maybe he will listen.

My pain is caused by a herniated disk I found out last year.  So far I have had 2 epidural pain blocks and now wear a fentanyl pain patch 100 mcg q48.
