Title: Monthly Labs
Post by: Kayholio on September 26, 2012, 04:58:39 PM
Had my monthly lab clinic appointment today. Got the results of my September labs. Phosphorus was a bit high, not sure why. I take my pills when I'm supposed to, with everything I eat. Everything was fine. The doctor said my HDL(good cholesterol) was low. He said something about doing stationary bike, but I really don't have one and I don't have room in my apartment. Has anyone else been told this? If so, how did you raise the level?

Two ways to increase your HDL: 1) modify your diet and 2) exercise.

On diet from AAKP

On exercising

EDIT:  Here are a couple of links on purchasing a bike pedaler which is much less expensive than a stationary bike and doesn't take up any room at all.  You can also use the pedaler while on dialysis (with your neph's approval).

I had the best lab results this time than I have had since I have been on dialysis...I am so glad I only have to get stuck 1 more time this month to get an epo shot! My neph told me walking would be my best exercise (I'm on PD).  I was up to 2 miles every other day, but then had my extraneal issues so I have been sluffing off the past 2 weeks...am going to try to start again tomorrow.

Smiles,
Ricki

I used to get high phosphor :secret;us numbers, but once I started eating TUMS with meals instead of the calcium prescription pills that ended.

Kayholio,

I'm gonna conclude that you are in-center 3x per week dialysis?
When you only dialyze 3x per week, this is not nearly enouph dialysis to clear your body of phosphorus. You are only cleaning what is currently in the bloodstream. So its not going to matter how many binders you take, there is going to be a net gain in phosphorus as you are dialyzing 3x per week and have 4 days that you are gaining phosphorus buildup.  Over time this can affect yoru bones, vascular system and heart.
Are you a candidate for home dialysis? Has your nephrologist ever informed you about the choice of home dialysis?
