I have been doing traditional hemo dialysis for 5+ years and this weekend i ran my first 5km in a time of 47min 45 seconds.
Am i happy with my time, even though i wanted to be 7 mins faster. But it's a good start. I plan on training all winter and trying again in the spring.
It was a cold morning for the race at only 6 C but it was a lot of fun.
For all those who where athletic pre-D it is possible, it takes a lot of work. And alll those that want to get fit and healthy, take it slow and remember because we are D patients its always 1 step a head 2 steps back.

Congratulations!
I've always wanted to be a runner but just don't feel like it's in my genetics. However a friend of mine is being tested to see if she can donate and she's a runner. I told her I hoped she was the match because maybe her kidney would give me the running gene.

Wow! That is so amazing. I have never been a runner but you make me hopeful that I can get healthier despite being on dialysis. Way to go!

Wow Rain!! You are my hero(ine) !!!!!! that's a bloody awesome effort - even moreso on D.
I feel pretty good when I *walk* 5k's in just under an hour, and you ran it. Yeah you want it to be faster, but that you had the energy and stamina to do that distance is fantastic!!! I really am in awe.
I've always been a walker - I'd suck as a runner I'd puff out in 100m! LOL I look forward to you zooming past me on a regular basis (well virtually given our different locations and all) but it's fantastic.
well done. I am highly impressed!!!

So i have decided to join a running group to help increase my speed. So in 1 week i start. I am also toying with the idea of running my next 5 km in a couple months on December 1st - Santa Shuffle for the Salvation Army. The only reason I am hesitant is because I don't want it to be cold and snow on the ground by then.
Richard don't think I wasn't huffing and puffing during the race. At the 2km mark I thought I wasn't going to make it. But I did and I felt so proud of myself. My boyfriend was watching my progress online and he got worried when i slowed down at the 2 km mark to a walk. Then when i got to the 3.5 mark i started up a again.

Way to go! :cheer:
I'd like to run, but I feel very awkward, like my legs don't work quite right. I walk instead but I still think about trying to run sometimes.

There was a lot of people who walked the 5km. It's great energy and motivate. So if you want to try a 5km walk go for it, it gives you a goal to work toward.
That's the only way i could keep exercising at my current level is if i set goals. Winter is also the hardest to stay physically active.
