Title: Has anyone had eye focusing problems before starting dialysis?
Post by: Sydnee on September 15, 2012, 05:12:45 PM
I don't know whether it has anything to do with 12% gfr that I'm at or something else. The last couple of weeks I have had a few bouts of trouble focusing my eyes. It happens after I get nauseated but not every time I get nauseated.  my blood pressure is normal during this time.

my eyes feel like when you look out the side window of a moving car and try to focus  (if that makes sense)

Wondering if anyone else has been through this.

my GFR is 26 and I seem to have blured vision at times. Rather anoying but i assume its related to my PKD

I would see an eye doctor.  You could have hemorrhage in your eye.  I had the same problem and that's what the eye doctor told me.  Hope this helps.

As my kidney function continued to decline, so did my vision.  Despite my age (when people get far sighted and need reading glasses) I was getting near sighted (stuff at distance got fuzzy) and then developed the very odd vision of seeing "stars" in things like traffic lights, brake lights, etc.  Sort of like looking at fancy Xmas lit-up Christmas ornaments.

Turns out it was steroid-induced cataracts.

Corticosteroids can screw up your vision by giving you cataracts.

Surgery on right, then left, and my vision is clear (except like a lot of old codgers, I need reading glasses or some way to make my arms 2 feet longer).

Don't know if this helps, but check to see how your distance vision is looking straight ahead.  See an opthalmologist, too.

My husband had cataract surgery on one eye last week.  Has been on dialysis for three years, had his eyes checked a year ago with no sign of cataracts and when his vision was going and he went back, was told his vision had basically decreased by 60 percent since last check.

Both the opthamologist and the optometrist said it's not unusual for kidney patients.

I have what I call a "headache without the pain."  My eyes feel tired and just don't "want" to be open sometimes. I sort of feel like I'm squinting I. The sun, but I am not.  Like a pressure? I assumed it was kidney stuff but a nephrologist  looked at me like I was crazy.   I still don't know what it was, maybe I need a new glasses rx.  It was gone for over a year but came back a few months ago.  It's on and off, so I was thinking it was from an electrolyte imbalance or something.  Guess I'll get my eyes checked, as should you.  Last eye check, had no glaucoma or anything, but that was a year ago.

light bothers my eyes during these episodes.  Anyone else?  Anyone think it's just from lack of sleep?

I'm glad I saw this thread.  I have similar problems, especially with the sun and pressure in the eyeballs. My gfr is 16.  I never thought about it being related to my PKD.  I've been meaning to go get it checked out.
