Look at what Coke just sent me! A list of a LOT of their products with a listing of nutritional info that includes Phosphorus, Potassium, and Sodium!
Can we make this a sticky?
Please, see the attached PDF.

:2thumbsup; good list to have

My phosphorus went up last month because I was drinking "Zero" cokes, the 8 oz. kind. I know it was the cokes because my previous three labs were all good ones. My nutritionist told me that the phosphorus in colas goes straight into the blood, and it's worse than the phosphorus, in say, beans. He told me I could drink one every two weeks. I drink root beer instead.
-
From the list, it looks like Diet Coke is not too bad. But my dietician still tells me no dark colored soft drinks except Root Beer. I follow that and usually drink Iced Tea.
-
I do as well, I was told as long as it isn't the bottled icetea so I brew it myself.
-
Great List!
I would love a Cherry Coke right now... Mmm Yummy :beer1;
But I am very Good about what I drink... Only clear sodas except for rootbeer, so I like to normally stick to Iced Tea.
-
OH NO!!!! Dont tell me the bottled tea is not good for you. How about the powders we mix with water, are those okay???
-
Thanks so much for this! When I had kidneys that functioned normally, I used to love my Diet Coke Cherry Vanilla.....I was addicted to that, amd Diet Dr.Pepper Cherry...I have now switched to either Ginger ALe or A&W ARoot Beer, both diet. But I would kill well, maybe not kill) for one of the first two!

My wife got some new soda flavor, and I wound up drinking 3 12 oz. of it! It's black cherry, and man is it good. The label does not list phosphorus on it.

From what I heard, nope
-
Why do they seem to put potassium in every processed drink? :waiting;

Very nice article dude,I must say this is a very good information,I appreciate you for sharing it with us.I didn't knew these facts about the coke.
It helped me a lot like other people.Keep sharing your stuff like this.Ill be very thankful.

I switched a few years ago to green tea and water for my drinks after drinking huge amounts dark sodas while on dialysis. My high phosphorous dropped to normal ranges regularly.
-
this is a good post!!!! Very informative!!!Thanks.

I was having a hard time giving up coke and pepsi and determined to find a replacement. I've discovered Whole Foods has their 365 brand soda and the cola has no phosphoric acid but my new favorite is Blue Sky Organic New Century Cola, I found it at my local grocery store but you can also get it on amazon.com at a really good price, they also make a diet cola. Cheers!!

I don't get it on the "why" they say to stay away from coke because my renal dietitian told me I'm allowed up to 800 mg of Phosphorus a day and one 8 oz coke isn't gonna make much difference if I'm paying attention to the total amount i'm getting in one day. You can have these forbidden foods and drinks but know how much of what is in them and stay within the limit your renal dietitian gave you.
-
I was a coke addict for a long time. I really like the flavored water products on the market now. I especially like the fruit punch. I bright in to my dietitian and she said it was good but to stay away from the "energy" flavored products. The "energy" ones have some ingredients that are not good. I use the Walmart brand or milo brands.
-
Try Mt. Dew, it's phosphorus free!
-
I'll give this to my Dietician! It's funny...they say don't drink dark sodas, and yet, it's shockingly low. Maybe because we overindulge as Americans in soft drinks? I keep trying to suggest to Coke/Pepsi to attempt to make a Phosphoric Acid free cola tasting soda for Dialysis units.
Dialadrink
You know how fricken much that would sell? :P
-
Dialadrink....I would buy that by the CASE!
-
Pepsi Natural was around for a little while.
No Phosphoric Acid.
Not sure if it is still available, though.

I've kinda pretty much given up on the dietitians. When he first started dialysis, they asked what he drank. When he answered Gatorade, they were horrified. No Gatorade! High potassium! It's terrible!
From the label: 45mg potassium per 12 oz (355 ml) serving.
And the Coke is not particularly high phosphorus, though it may be more bioavailable as an additive.
I suspect they are as susceptible to urban legends as the rest of us.

Both of your conclusions are correct.

Excuse me, going for a Coke, will be right back. :flower;

I was told no dark sodas. So I've been avoiding Root Beer for nothing :'(
If it wasn't for Moutain Dew, Mello Yello, and Iced tea, I would have nothing to live for... except the wife and kid, I guess

My husband can drink Ginger Ale (Diet because he's diabetic) and Diet Root Beer. I don't think anyone could stand me if I had to give up coffee but he's cut back on his morning cup so that he doesn't have to further cut back on his water/fluid intake. The proof is in the pudding when he weighs in just before we start his treatments at home. Helps to keep the scale in the kitchen. He stays very close to his dry weight, if not under. He likes ice cubes and frozen grapes.
FYI: another benefit of doing home hemo is that your diet and fluid intake isn't quite as restricted as when you do in-center. The more frequent dialysis, the less restrictive.

I love my nutritionist, she is awesome! I however would rather trust the USDA Nutritional Database.
