Not sure if this goes for everybody but for my wife she does home hemo and every month they have her draw blood and do all the standard test like phosphorus, calcium etc. Anyway, on this report her Kt/V (Adequacy of Dialysis) came back 6.71 when it usually averages around 2. Since she started treatment I have never seen it above 3. I know this is VERY good, but what would cause such a high jump? I'm wondering so we can try and keep it up there, but she hasn't changed her diet or anything like that. The only thing I can think of is she likes to snack while doing treatment, and maybe this time she didn't so it gave her true numbers? Thanks

My first thought would be lab error and see what it is next month. What was the URR?
I do in-center extended treatment at night and if Kt/V comes back over 3.95 (based on the amount of time I run), lab wants a redraw to check again.
What is your wife's dialysis prescription? You didn't mention, but I'm assuming she's on NxStage. Hopefully, others who utilize this treatment will respond to your question.
Yeah shes on NxStage..5x a week with 2 1/2 hr run time. Not sure what the URR stands for.

I got the exact same result this month as well. The doctor showed me where it had to be a computer error because he showed me the numbers that go into the calculation and they just don't add up. So I will be asking the nurse when I go in for clinic tomorrow if they had a computer malfunction this month.

I should also say that I am also on nxstage with the same run times as your wife.

URR for NxStage is lower than 60 for short daily haemo. Expected for this modality is about 45%. The reason for this that the URR is a ratio between the urea level before dialysis and that of it after. Since SDHD is done more often, urea level is lower to start with, less urea is removed per treatment (it is the frequency that makes this dialysis effective) so therefore it is expected to get a lower URR than in-unit.
That Kt/v doesn't sound right to me. Sounds like a lab error.

My clinic today confirmed that there was a computer error for DaVita home patients this month in calculating Kt/V.

Do you know what lab did the work?

I send my blood to the DaVita lab in Deland, Florida.

My clinic just changed labs and my Kt/V was down this month. I'll have to ask if they use the same lab. Thanks.
