Title: bruising and spider veins
Post by: adairpete on May 15, 2012, 01:15:15 PM
I have a question for everyone out there on dialysis if they've noticed unexplained bruises and an increase in spider veins with dialysis?  In the last couple weeks, I've noticed about a dozen small (dime-sized) bruises on my legs mostly but also on torso and alot more spider veins than I ever remember there being.  Also, on my legs, shoulders and arms it looks like a highway of veins!  Like they're multiplying or something. I've had the small bruises before (when I wasn't on dialysis) and my neph didn't think it was kidney related.  She sent me to a hematologist, but he couldn't find anything wrong.  They went away and that was that.  Now they're back but with spider veins and seemingly more veins.  Has anyone else expereinced vein changes while on dialysis like this?  I've been on PD for 21 months and hemo for 5 months before that.

I haven't had that specific problem. But a lot of people get skin changes on dialysis. Maybe your veins aren't changing but your skin is thinner and the veins show more. Just an idea.

I bruise easily when I'm anemic, but luckily I haven't had that problem in a few months! :clap;  However, I've been getting spider veins, in my arms, and in my torso area, and they HURT!  Heat, and ice seem to help, but I don't know where they are coming from.  I'm not saying it's directly from diaylsis though either since I had a baby 18 months ago (which causes massive changes as well to skin and hormones), but I also had a DVT in my arm and there are tons of spider veins there as well.  I've also noticed I have tons more freckles too!  I use vitamin E and aloe baby oil and it seems to help my skin retain moisture and I don't see as many veins as I once did.  (IT ALSO HELPS WITH ITCHINESS!!!!  :2thumbsup; )

Like others have said skin changes seem like a typical symptom.  My wife recently developed what looks like spider veins on her leg.  She said it's where she scratches alot when she is doing treatment, and that combined with the heparin is what is making her skin look that way.  It makes sense but this of course is just our theory, but she will find out for sure when she goes to the doctor in a week.  It has been this way for about a month now with no worsening or improvement of the area.

She has also developed darkened spots in areas exposed to the sun the most frequent.
