So we moved last year in the middle of my being so sick and did nothing with the yard here. But now I'm feeling better and I want to help my husband transplant flowers and other plants from the old house into our flowerbed here. What can I do? What must I not do?

Hi, Diane! I don't have any answers for you, but just wanted to tell you hoe glad I am that you feel well enough to garden! I'm sure others will be along with practical advice for you. All the best, as always.

They told me to wear gloves when working in soil. So I wear latex gloves from the drug store (like you would use for medical procedures) under my gardening gloves. There are some kinds of bacteria in soil that you have to be careful about, esp wet soil. Then when I'm done I always shower. Best to be safe. Yes the plastic gloves will be hot after awhile but it is what it is.

If you're gardening and it is a sunny day, make sure you slather on the sunscreen, and wear a wide brim hat. Or wear a long sleeve shirt, it may get warm but it'll keep the sun off your arms and you'll get to slather less sunscreen.
I was told that wear lip balm with spf too, as that is a common area for skin cancer.

Wonderful that you have extra energy now to garden. I do too. Wear gloves because soil can harbor viruses, fungi and bacteria. Also a good hat and sunscreen. I wear light weight long sleeves and pants so I don't stick or stab myself with plants or get bit by insects. Plus don't pick up anything too heavy. Have fun.

I garden a lot, really a lot. And I dig and I carry and I lift and I clip and I prune and I plant and I scrub out water features and I climb ladders and the occasional tree. I wear gardening gloves that are rubberized on one side and part way up over the back of the hand, I wear a hat, lots of sunscreen, long sleeves, and just bought a pair of bog rubber boots for my dirtiest work. I wash and scrub my hands thoroughly after working and mostly I love gardening.
