I was looking over this list and I am not sure if ALL of these are correct so I thought I would ask here! Thanks guys!
What has Phosphate in it?
- Soft drinks, soda drinks, especially cola or coke and fizzy
- lemonade
- Cordials/fruit syrup beverages
- Chocolate, lollies, sweets, candy, sugar
- Ice-cream
- Skim milk powder (often added to processed foods)
- Biscuits, cookies, cakes from the supermarket
- Tomato ketchup
- Mayonnaise
- Fish fingers
- Processed cheese, especially soft cheese spread
- Frozen pizzas
- Hot dogs
- Processed meats
- Baking powder and self-raising flour often contains phosphate aerator
- Avoid all foods that list as an ingredient mineral salts, emulsifiers and lecithin.
- Egg yolks
- Milk
- Nuts
- Wheat germ
- Soybeans and their by-products
- Peas
- Beans
- Lentils
- Corn
- Mushrooms
- Oats
- Cocoa beans (chocolate)
- Sweet breads - liver, brains, kidneys

As far as I know all those things have phosphate in them, but what you need to do is divide them up into groups that are either moderate in phosphate and are ok to eat or things that are high in phosphate which should be had only now and then.
We can't avoid phosphate completely, but need to keep our levels in check. The guides we are given are just that, different people have different views.

AlasdairUK is right on the mark.
I think the true way to managing the renal diet is to know what the values of the foods you eat and figure the totals for the day according to your limits --of phosphorus and potassium-- while making sure you eat enough protein and calories.
From understanding the actual phosphorus values, I have switched from mostly tuna salad to chicken salad, from 2 whole eggs to one egg and 1/3 tablespoon of egg whites. When you make those small changes, it allows you to eat some more cheese or have some more ice cream or even have that 8 oz glass of Coke!
It's all about managing the diet, not "cheating." It's hard at first. Then it becomes second nature and it works in the long-run.

Thank you Zach! That is so insightful and informative! I have had perfect Phosphate levels for the past 7 months but only because I have been depriving myself except for once or twice a month soon after blood work. But it makes sense what you say!
That is why I found your post on the cheeses informative because that was the first time I realized that I could have cheese! Also because of you I can have my favourite drink milk again .. only problem being that if I don't get a very small container I will drink it all in one day. Man I love that milk!
I think you had posted a listing once of the Phosphate and Potassium levels of certain mailks as well but I can't find that.
It takes a lot of research that I am not the best at to find the amoutn of phosphate in everything but all your advice (Zach and AlasdairUK) does make sense. You can't just go "can't have this ever, can only have this" or else what is there left to eat??
I will use that link to search thanks! Any more links and lists that say the levels for each much appreciated! :thumbup;

everything said is very true. Unfortunately, however we must (o gee really) remember that cheese is high in sodium. One ounce of cheddar is 176 mg sodium as well as the 145 mg of potassium. Cream cheese is a much better alternative, 1 Tbl (1 oz) 43 sodium, 15 phos. I have dreams about numbers, UGH!
