Title: protein powder help
Post by: sparklelady on May 11, 2012, 02:33:20 PM
My dad just had triple bypass and he is having major trouble eating. He is on hemo so I thought I might make him a protein drink or shake. I found some good recipes that call for protein powder. Can anyone recommend a powder to use?

I use syntha-6 protein powder.  After trying several I found this one tasted the best.  It's pretty good.

Walmart has the best prices on the whey protein powder. It's called "Six Star Pro Nutrition" Whey Protein plus Elite Series> it costs about $18 for a 2 lb can. They have chocolate, vanilla and I forget the other flavor. It's probably strawberry. 60 gram of protein per serving. The dietitian at my dialysis clinic says the phosphorous and potassium are low enough not to be a problem. Hope this helps.

I agree, check with the dietician for other ingredients e.g. potassium, sodium, etc and you can also check with the physician-- I only state this because some dieticians are not as well trained as others.

When hubby needed the extra protien, we used one called Beneprotien which is truly tasteless and oderless.  He was totally unaware I was adding it to almost everything he ate!

Ask his doc to order him Nepro shakes. My SO gets them through the clinic. He likes the handspun vanilla flavor. I don't know how much protein is in them, but he says they don't taste half bad.
