I just got the funniest phone call from my husband. For about 7 years now, he has been teaching graduate business courses in the evenings, usually one or two evenings a week (after his regular job as a city attorney). These courses attract a wide variety of students, many of them being in middle or upper management of various size companies. He has just begun a new semester teaching Business Law. One of his students happens to be a senior executive of BlueCross Blue Shield, so during the break, my husband mentioned to this man that I was going out of network to get double listed at Madison, and even though I had a referral for the pre-eval, would BCBS cover the actual transplant? (We both were quite sure that the answer would be yes, but I always have to have something to worry about.) The BCBS guy said that he was 99 percent sure it would be but that he would have his regional manager or someone check to make sure.
Anyway, another student happened to overhear this conversation, and she said that yes, it would be covered because a tx is ultimately less expensive than extra years on dialysis, and that the company she works for actively promote transplantation. When my husband asked who she worked for, she replied, "I'm the head executive of Davita's home dialysis department in Chicagoland." My husband nearly fell over, and he took the opportunity to tell her about me and my decision to use NxStage, etc. She went on to say that home dialysis is really great and that just about all of their patients do really well on it, that the clinical outcomes are so much better, etc.
So both of these executives from companies that so affect the lives of so many people here on IHD are my husband's Business Law students. LOL!
Well, I had to laugh because this kidney stuff tends to follow me around, you know? I know it's the same for all of you...CKD/ESRD is impossible to escape, and I often complain about that. And now it is stalking my husband! LOL! My world collided with his!

Thats really somethin MM... It's nice to see that he does know whats up with you even if he's watching from more outside than prefered. Mabie he'll hear some of the nity gritty of it and understand it more from an 'outsider'??? Anyway, yea, it's amazing how things bump huh...

Now THAT is bizarre!!!

Freaky! It's amazing how small the world can be at times.

Well, if anyone has any questions about Davita and their home D program, let me know and maybe I can get my husband to "casually ask" her.
