Title: Remeron/Mirtazapine
Post by: Restorer on April 09, 2012, 04:19:42 PM
Has anyone been on Remeron (the generic is mirtazapine)? I overheard a doctor recommending it to another patient for increasing appetite. I wonder if it might be worth bringing up with my neph for doing the same.

If you've been on it, has it helped? Did you have any side effects?

Remeron is a tetracyclic antidepressant. One of it's common side effects is to increase appetite. They were considering putting my SO on it as a mood stabilizer. It is used off label to treat anorexia and low appetite and underweightness. The transplant psychiatrist has considered it for my SO, so I assume it would be safe for someone on dialysis to use.

I was on Remeron for depression.  My doc told me to take it at bedtime because it might make me sleepy (it did).  It also must have increased my appetite because I would get up in the middle of the night and eat but wouldn't remember doing it the next morning.  Figured it out when I blamed my son fro leaving the kitchen in a mess a few times and he kept saying it wasn't him then one night he and a couple of friends came home at 2:00 AM and found me eating scrambled eggs!  :oops;
The Remeron also raised my Triglycerides, so if that's a problem for you you might want to look for another option.
