Title: Travelling to Europe on Summer?
Post by: CatonTheRoof on February 29, 2012, 07:23:52 PM
Hello everyone, I'm new here :)  just introduced myself yesterday.

Well to resume, I'm a 22 year old person from the capital of Colombia. Between 2010 and last year I was studying in Prague, then somehow a sore throat during last winter ended up in kidney failure.  Since then I had to return to my country, and I'm thinking of having a transplant with my mum.

Insurances here however, are very slow so I have no idea if by summer I will already have my new kidney.   In case I don't, I would like going to Europe at least for two weeks, at least to visit my friends and crush. :)     Currently I'm on peritoneal dialysis with Nocturnal cycler,  the ones in charged of my dialysis are Fresenius.   I would like to know if anyone of you has travelled from the States, or for that matter from somewhere else, to Europe while being on Peritoneal dialysis.  And if so,  could you tell me what did you have to do?

Trust me folks, the social worker of Fresenius hates me and the sole idea that I would travel to have fun with friends irritates her.  According to her, is impossible to travel on dialysis.

Thanks in advance :)

Well she is wrong and you can prove her wrong!!!! Yes there are people on here that travel with PD.  We did not travel while hubby did PD., but we have traveled with this NxStage machine.  Now our travel was by car, but some on here have flown everywhere.  They might can put their 2cents in.

But yes, your SW is wrong!!!!

Good luck in your travels, sounds thrilling!

How do you handle the situation of the bags, and also what is better to do, manual or nocturnal?

How would I have to do concerning the bags?  would they have to be sent from here, or can I take them with me?

Not sure if you're with Baxter - but if you are, this is from their website:
Baxter has an extensive global distribution network which enables us to deliver to many destinations within the United States and around the world. With the help of Baxter's Global Destinations Program, patients can successfully continue their PD therapy while exploring the world abroad, including Alaska and Hawaii and cruises from any port, domestic or international. Patients should talk to their dialysis nurse and Baxter HomeCare Services Travel Specialist to learn more.

!lin 2008, I went to Sicily for a week and took my supplies with me on the plane. In this past summer I went to Germany to visit my now husband. I would perfer to do the cycler at night anywhere I go. But Im not rich, and my insurance does not pay for out of the country. The cycler involves many more supplies then just manuals. So I normally do manuals if i leave the country.
If your insurance will pay for the cost to deliver them, then I would go that route. other then that taking then with you is the most cost effective.

Thanks a lot for your advise!  and congrats on your marriage  :2thumbsup;  its nice to see that we don't give up despite such problems!

Just one more thing:  How did you take the bags with you?  in the suitcase that is taken by the airline, or in the one you take personally?    how many kg of liquid was it?  no problems with police thinking you were trafficking something? lol

Thanks again :)

Thanks. Yes I did get married on diaysis

Lol, ok in 2008, when I went to Sicily, I went for a week, figured out how man boxes I would need. And decided to pay the luggage fee.
YOU MUST HAVE A DOCTORS LETTER BEFORE GOING ANYWHERE WITH SOLUTIONS. Going through security, I always explain what I have. I didnt have a problem until I actually got to Sicily. lol and they let me go because I started crying at the airport. lol
When I went to Germany this summer. My at the time, fiance paid for some of the boxes to be mailed. THe reset of the boxes, he thought would be easier if we emptied them and squeezed them into a large suitecase. lol Well once we got to the airport here in Mchigan to go to Germany, on the scale here, the dialysis weighed over 130lbs! Not sure what that in kg. lol. Too heavy to go on the plane. Sooo the security ran around to try to find a large box for some of the solution. Once in Germany, the box was tossed and the solution was put back in the suitecase. lol The wheels on the suitecase broke by the time we got to his military barricks.

Other then that. No problems. lol
