Title: Pomegranate Juice - Good or Bad?
Post by: SteveK87 on January 07, 2012, 07:50:05 PM
I know the Potassium content is high up there, but the pom. juice is good for people without kidney failure because of it's antioxidant features.  Is it ok in moderation or small amounts?  I know there are "lite" versions with less potassium but I would imagine it would also eliminate some of the added benefits of the regular juice.

As a transplant patient, I was told to avoid anything pomegranate because it interferes with the absorption of the  immunosupressant meds.

I would think a sip every now & then would not hurt!  Just don't do it alot.  Im not sure of the ingridient, but it probably has Potassium & phosphorus. Again, just a little, it shouldnt be a problem, IMHO.

I drink it from time to time, and have given it to J, but he is not in to Pomengranate fruit, he prefers grape or cranbury juice.

If you're  on  any  type  of  STATINS  avoid  pomegranates  as  well.
It  can  interfere  with  statins  just  like  grapefruit  does.

i agree that pom is an excellent antioxidant, but since being on dialysis, i've cut it out of my diet.

personally anything hig high in K is a lttle scary at my house because we have had some issues about that. They do sell chocolate covered pomagrantes which is nice, but lol, that darn dialysis diet. That's a double whammy. I guess if you keep your diet under good control most times, a tiny handful would be ok.

Pomegranate Juice

1 Cup bottled 249g

Calories 134

Potassium 533mg

Phosphorous 27.4mg

excluding people with transplants,  I'd say if you watch your total daily potassium (keep count on how much you have  total per day) it would be ok to have a cup of it.  The Phosphorous is quite low.

The renal dietitian I saw told me I could have 2 to 4 thousand mg a day of Potassium and my labs show it's been in the normal range.  So go for it and remember to pay attention to your total potassium per day.

That's more potassium than orange juice. Drink small portions with care.

i recently had my final meeting with the transplant nurse and things have changed since my first transplant in regards to pomagrenate.  When i had my first transplant, they said no to pom as it interferes with med absorption.  But recently, they told me after the transplant pom is ok as it doesn't interefere.  Grapefruit is a no no though, as it will interfere with med absorption, but pom is fine.  if you do almost daily hemo, you can have a little bit of pom juice (not the fruit though) as it is high in potassium, i ran that by my home hemo dietician.

Just bought some Cran-Pomegrant juice today at store.  Heard it was delicious, so gonna try it on J. He likes pomegrante some, but prefers Cran or Grape.  So I thought I would get us a MIX of the two!

Got to be cold though, so it will be in frige over night!
Nutrition facts: 10fl.oz. Calories 150; Sodium 45mg; potassium 50mg ;Total Carb 37g

I don't think that is too bad, but the total carbs could be used for Hypoglycemia.  It would bring it up pretty quickly! We will know more by 2morrow!

If you're looking for something that is has more actual pom content look for the POM Juice brand usually located in Fruits and Vegetable departments in stores.  It has more actual pom juice content unlike the Ocean Spray or various other brands that are found in the Juice isle in grocery stores.  In fact, if you look at some of the ingredients of the non-refrigerated juices that are located in the juice isle most contain more apple juice than actual cherry, pom, cranberry, etc.  The higher content pom juice in the Produce section is more pricey but in actuality you're paying for the real deal and a better taste.

Okay, listen up:  We all know that little old ladies, 100 years old or more, do their socializing in two ways; quilting parties and Pomegranate squeezing parties.  In both, they work their feeble little fingers to the bone.  Imagine taking a fresh Pomegranate, cutting it open, then squeezing each little red-thingy to get a drop of juice.

Drink Kool-aid.

Gerald, after a very tedious dialysis session, BP so low I could hardly see..... and the longest day at the office - you have MADE MY DAY... seeing pictures of tired little frail old ladies crushing pomegranates into infinity....
