Title: All night at home vs in center question
Post by: glochis on December 31, 2011, 05:29:31 PM
My daughter had "adjustments" to her fistula (16 weeks old) two weeks ago and was knocked out for it.  One week later she had pneumonia.  They gave her a Z pack for antibiotic - 6 pills over 5 days.  Was doing fine until 2 days ago when she started with upper chest pain.  24 hours in hospital and a multitude of tests, her heart is unchanged, kidneys holding at 6.4 and lungs mostly clear.  No reason for pain from shoulder to shoulder across chest, so home we came for the New Year with pain meds.
One of the Drs who saw her mentioned she would be ideal for at home dialysis.  Plug in overnight and have her days free.  Is this something she would do with a fistula???  I thought that was only with a tube to her belly.

Thanks for any help to clarify.

Check with her center and also on this board.  There is definitely home hemo available, as well as PD.  Seems a really viable option for lots of people.  Good luck.

There are a couple of options for extended "overnight" hemo dialysis. There are several available areas here on IHD:

I hope this helps.

Hi, glochis! It's ABSOLUTELY something she can do with a fistula: home hemodialysis (HHD). The tube in the belly is peritoneal dialysis (PD), but either modality can be performed at home. I've been doing nocturnal home hemo with a fistula since November of last year and I feel great. Here's a really good site to learn about the different home modalities:

homedialysiscentral.org

And specifically for nocturnal:

Hubby has been doing nocturnal hemo dialysis for over 5 years and he feels wonderful.
