My hubby recently started taking Renvela. He took it last night with dinner. Later, he had nausea. This morning he was vomiting. :puke; He was experiencing nausea a couple of days ago after taking Renvela. Anyone else with this problem? What else can be used as a phosphate binder? Tums?

my husband uses Renagel. No problems, but they are like horse tablets.

From Renvela's website:
The most frequently occurring side effects observed with sevelamer carbonate tablets were nausea and vomiting.
I take it everyday and do not have any problems with nausea.

I started taking it in July.
Since I am pre-dialysis, my neph told me to take it with either lunch or with dinner. I take it with whichever meal I think with be the most "phosphoric". It give me diarrhea like nobody's business, and I have discovered that if I take it with lunch (ie, earlier in the day), I'll feel nauseous in the evening. At first I thought my kidneys were finally crapping out, but labs showed no change in gfr/creatinine, so I realized it must be the renvella. I guess when I take it in the evening, I sleep through the sicky time.
I never had trouble with vomiting, though. Just the squirties. :P
My mom tried every binder on the market, and each one gave her some kind of gyp. I guess Mooses and their moms are just wired that way.
But yes, renvella can cause nausea.

The Renvela are BIG tablets, and they are expensive! $30.00 copay for 10 day supply. That's $90.00 per month, with insurance!
My husband had diarrhea, too!
Back in the old days, (12-15 years ago) he took Tums. He had a transplant in 1999, but it recently failed. :( Now, they recommend he take the Renvela, but it doesn't seem to agree with him.

I use the calcium acetate (Phoslo generic) and have not had a problem with them. I did notice I got a bit nauseous with the Renvella, but am off it for the time being.

In answer to your question, YES. Any and all Phosphorus binders, Renagel, Renvella, Phoslo...ect...have listed as a side effect. My husband takes them and occassionally he vomits. Not always but mostly he does. It is listed as a side affect but is not harmful! Just aggravating!!!! :stressed;

I had more issues with renagel then renvella which I'm on now, renagel made me constipated, but as stated all binders have pretty much the same side affects.
