Title: My first bad day
Post by: Pam on December 21, 2011, 06:50:12 PM
I've been doing in center hemo for almost 3 yrs. I have been very lucky to have never had a problem. Until today. My tech is on vacation and I got the new girl. Everyone that has had her says she does a good job. I got weighed in. Have a dry weight of 53.5 and weighed in at 55. Sat in my chair and told the tech that my arterial points down, meaning toward the wrist and that she would have to flip the needle. Did she listen.....no! I have buttonholes and all of a sudden I felt the most awful pressure and pain. She was trying to get the needle in pointing up towards my shoulder. She thought I meant to go deep. :Kit n Stik; Thankfully no infiltration. So that was fixed and I was running fine. My run time is 2 hr 45 min. At the 2 hr mark I started getting very sick and lighted headed. Instead of taking off 1.5 they hit the wrong button and were taking off 2.5.  It has taken me all day to recover from this. I don't know how some of you put up with this stuff all the time.

OH, Pam, I feel for you.  :cuddle;

I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I hope that your next run goes well.

I'm so sorry.  That really really SUCKS!  You now have the badge that everyone gets at some point I suppose.  But what a price to pay.

I am so happy with the tech who needles me that I have anxiety attacks when i think she won't be there.  i almost think I'd rather skip the session than try to have someone else stick me.

I hope that is your one and only bad experience.

I knew it was bound to happen at some time. I don't know how some people deal with it on a regular basis. My reg tech will not be there on Fri. but on my way out I let the head nurse know that I wouldn't except treatment
 from the new tech. She said no problem.

Pam,
Just back from Phoenix.  Dry weight at 53K (Set for cloths on).  I arrived dehydrated at 51.9.  They also took off 2.5K after I had asked to put on at the minimum of .6K.

Crashed.  2 days later I am still trying to recover.  What a creepy feeling - lost my eyesight until revived.

Sorry guys that this unfortunately DOES happen!  Pam, can you not do your own cannulation or do they allow that in your clinic?

I don't know if they would let me or not. I think I could do the venus without a problem. It always slides right in. My arterial is at a curve in my fistula and sometimes my Tech looks like she is standing on her head to get the right angle. I had to really push them to get buttonholes. They didn't want to do them and I think I'm the only ones that has them. :Kit n Stik;
