My 82 yr old mother had this fitted 2 days ago and had her first dialysis for 2 hours yesterday,She said she had tingling feelings in her legs
She is still in hospital and says they are going to increase the times over a week
My question really is how long will it take for her to be on 4 hourly dialysis before she can be released from hospital and come home.

It depends on the person. WHen I started dialysis I was out the same day.
But my mom who is older, when she started dialysis (unrelated reasons) they kept her there for a few treatments to make sure her body could handle it. She has been on dialysis for 11 years and has only 1 access left, we were told if that fails, that's it, no other access could be put in. She got the last permacath put in a few months ago and they kept her there for 3 treatments to make sure it is running okay and her blood works was fine, because she went 5 days without dialysis.

Hi gillian56 welcome to the site, sorry to hear about your mum. They are probably keeping her a little while to check every thing is going OK. Dialysis is not easy especially at that age, it takes it out of strong people. They will let her come home when they think it is right./ Hope she goes on alright.

I was there almost two weeks as they were checking how I respond to treatments, also had to check why my kidneys failed, etc.

Thanks for all your replys,
Mum has had 4 days d now and the nurse today said that they have the machine set to just drain fluid 8 kilos in 4 days
Mum said she can bend her legs now and is feeling much better,
They are going to put 2 shunts into the blood supply to her kidneys in hope they can make them work better with an improved blood supply
Has anyone else had this done?
