HELLO, MY NAME IS ROY AND I HAVE BEEN ON DIALYSIS FOR ABOUT 3.5 YEARS NOW. I HAVE DONE IT ALL FROM P.D. , TO CYCLER, TO FISTULA. I HAVE HAD TO CATHETER ON BOTH SIDES OF MY CHEST. ONE LOWE ARM FISTULA, A TUBE HANGING OUT OF MY STOMACH, AND NOW AN UPPER ARM FISTULA. I HAVE EVEN HAD PERITONITUS (3) DAMN TIMES. TRUST ME, YOU DONT WANNA FELL THAT KINDA PAIN. ANYWAYS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ACNE IS A SIDE EFFECT OF DIALYSIS. ALL MY LIFE I NEVER HAD ANYTHING BUT LIGHT ACNE, NOW AFTER 3 YEARS OF DIALYSIS I AM BREAKING OUT LIKE A TEENAGER. PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME IF THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME. :shy;

Hi Roy....I have been on Hemo for 2 1/2 yrs. I've never had a problem with acne, but I'm 60 so maybe age makes a difference. I'm sure some one will have an answer for you.

If you are taking EPO or similar drug then acne may be a side-effect.

yes I have hte same problem and yes I do blame it on dialysis. It started around 3 years, and Im going on year number 4 with dialysis.
I have to see a dermatologist. It does also affect your hormones.
Good luck,

I was on the home dialysis when I was like 19. Never had acne with or without the PD dialysis. I was again on PD when I was 36 and the acne was atrocious. Went to several doctors and never could clear it up. Started on HD in 2004 and to this day do not have a problem with acne, however, after dialyzing, the hot flashes are UNBEARABLE! So, it has to mess with your hormones although the dietician and doctors say they dont think it does. :stressed;

Yup, I got it and it cleared up a lot after the transplant, too. I was told the steroids I would be taking post-transplant would cause it, but it was so much better after than it was on D, I figured the D had to have something to do with it.
I think it's partly that we sweat out toxins that healthy people urinate out. That crap is all over our skin, clogging our pores. My back was a mess when I was in center, because I'd get sweaty in the nasty vinyl chair. Once I switched to home D and a cloth recliner, that cleared up a lot. Of course, a healthy diet isn't completely possible on D either, so that probably doesn't help.

I was explaned by an endrocrinologist that what happens to dialysis is that is like a screen and that all the toxins and everything goes through the screen and not everything gets cleared, such as hormones. I have gone to my OB/GYN, and they took labs that shows my hormones are high. That is why, they dont get cleared by dialysis.

Yes dialysis goes me to break out but it's because the suck the extra fluid off that causes my skin the dry out, and my pores to clog.
But what ifind helps it rubbing coconut oil (yes the stuff you cook with). it's an antibacterial and I find it there is really a sensitive spot, I put it on at night and it has decreased by morning and within a few days the acne is gone.
