hello all,
I know there is a list of foods to avoid, I would like a list of foods I can eat. have polycystic kidneys and my numbers are dropping fast. I quit smoking and strated eating everything in sight even though I know i SHOULD NOT HAVE. My kidneys are hurting very bad and i need to know what i can eat to not overworked them and cause any more damage. Thanks for your suggestions or ideas or what has helped you. A ist of foods to eat will be so helpful.

Wat76, We always say a little of what you fancy in moderation does not hurt. My husband just steers clear of dairy.

If you are still pre-D, that's a different list of foods than post D. My doc suggested I lower my protein intake. There's a chance that may slow the damage to the kidneys. Other than that, pre-D, it's all about eating as healthy as possible - fruits, veggies, grains, etc. Keep hydrated, and learn what the lab numbers mean in terms of how much potassium and phos your body can handle pre-D.

Stay clear of cheee and milk. Hard cheese and processed cheese in particular. Milk and cheese and high in phosphorus and will damage your kidneys in the long run of things. I am taking phosphorus binders because my phosper has been a little high. I wish someone would have told me pre renal failure to watch these foods but no one told me, I wish someone had.
A low sodium diet will help you too.
If you can't entirely eliminate with your cravings, just try to cut back, that will help greatly.
