Title: Feeling Ill
Post by: pureserenity on July 19, 2011, 06:13:56 AM
Hi, i got a call at teatime yesterday from my GP saying my creatinine had raised to 570 and he wanted to admit me to hospital.
I refused and went in as an outpatient this morning.

My usual neph is on holiday so i seen his associate, who seems to think that i shouldnt be feeling nausea with a creatinine of 570 and that i must be dehydrated and are probably craving steroids (i came off them 2 wks ago)

He has now put me back on steroids (30mg) and has told me to rest and drink lots and lots of water.

Now, i went to the grand prix 2 wks ago and drank a little more than usual and i swelled up like a balloon ( ankles, calfs, thighs, lower back ) which took a week to reduce.

my creatine 5 wks ago was 500 and my neph wanted to put a neckline in and start dialysis but put me on steroids instead. A week later it was down to 330 then a wk later 310. I was taken off the steroids ( 60mg for 1 wk, then down to 30mg for a wk then to 10mg for a week then 5mg a day for 5 days) and i had an improvment in how i felt.

I feel like im being fobbed off and being made to feel like the symptoms are all in my head. I see my usual neph on 2nd aug but im worried that im going to get really ill before then and get ignored.

I am usualy treated with respect and compasion and whilst this 'stand in' Dr was perfectly nice its not the first time i have had conflicting advice/treatment...
the last time my neph was away the 'stand in' (different guy) kept me on drugs that i was ment to have come off!!!

Im confused, and feel ill...I just want to fall asleep and be woke up when i have my transplant. Its all getting too much for me...Life is really hard right now,

I am not familiar with the creatinine numbers as we use .6 to 1.2 for a normal range in the US, but if you're feeling bad it's definitely a clue that you may need dialysis soon. Have you gotten information to help you choose what type of dialysis you want to eventually be on? Have they discussed vein mapping for hemo or the surgery for peritoneal dialysis?
The numbers are important, but your symptoms are key as they vary from person to person.
I hope you get some better support soon.  :cuddle;

Hi
the creatinine will translate to 5.7 then.
My neph just wants to put a neckline in so wont get to choose what  type of dialysis i will get. His reasoning for this is " it will be temporary, and we are still hoping to transplant you pre emptily"
considering i was hrs away from a neckline when my creatinine was 5 (coming off the ace inhibitor and steroids got me to 3.3) i cant see that happening.
My blood urea is 20 and sodium is a little bit low

Hi, Claire,

Here in Ontario, Canada where I'm from , the hospitals I deal with,  they will start dialyzing you at about 600. I understand your numbers. You will feel better with dialysis. I did. My creatine was 2400 and I was a size 2X for my clothes, I was that swollen all over, retaining fluids that bad.  I almost died from renal failure my labs were that high. I was about an hour from dying.

I also had sleep problems. I was a major insominiac at night and during the day wanted to just sleep, sleep , sleep. The confusion is what I felt too, that is very typical.

Don't fight it, the less you try to fight it, the easier you'll accept dialysis.      :grouphug;

I know how hard this can seem. Over whelimng at times, like it never goes away. What caught my attention was the fact you said like you're being made to have the symptoms in your head. But.... you did say that it took a week to get your fluid down at one point. Edema is a symptom of CKD so you are experiencing symptoms. My guess is thier just starting. Talk with your original Dr when he gets back. Everyone responds to CKD differently. One day at time...... evreyone here is by your side!

Claire, can you go back and see your GP? Blokey's GP was (is) BRILLIANT at getting the renal team to see sense.  Back when this was all just starting she knew him better than the Neph/s did and so she was his advocate.  She trusted him and if he said he was ill, then he was ill.

Grand Prix a couple of weeks ago? Are you in England?  I'm in East Anglia. I know that Blokey was admitted when his creatinine spiked dramatically just before he began haemoD but I can't recall what it was.  I think it was six hundred and something, but it was the Neph who admitted him.
