Title: Non-Dairy Whipped Topping?
Post by: drgirlfriend on July 14, 2011, 10:13:47 AM
Ok. Here's where I show my age and my frustration. I distinctly remember Cool Whip being advertised as non-dairy whipped topping when I was younger (the 70's and 80's). Am I crazy? Do I not remember correctly? If I'm not nuts, when did Cool Whip become ALL DAIRY?!?! I keep reading these renal diet recipes and seeing non-dairy whipped topping as an ingredient and as far as I can tell it does not exist. What the hell are they talking about? Do you know? I tried making Dream Whip with rice milk. The consistency was weird and it tasted like marshmallow fluff. Not that that's a bad thing necessarily, but it isn't like whipped cream.

2010, apparently.

Cool Whip
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cool Whip is a brand of imitation whipped cream named a whipped topping by its manufacturer. It is used in North America as a dessert topping and in some no-bake pie recipes. It was generally described as "non-dairy" as it contained no cream or milk and no lactose; however, it did contain the milk derivative casein. In 2010 both skimmed milk and light cream were added to Original Cool Whip.

Nothing on why, though - or if anyone is making a non-dairy version.  I'd check the ingredient list on the store generic versions.

Thanks jbeany!
So evil!! How could they do that to me? It had to be personal....
I have checked the ingredients on every whipped topping I've seen in Fayetteville and they all have milk/cream. What a bummer. Makes me think that the renal diet recipes I have are from 20 years ago or an alternate reality.

Well, who the heck expected them to change the recipe after all those years?  It was created in 1967 - so, yes, some of those recipes are older than 20 years by far!

I definitely remember it being "non-dairy".  Hmmm...I thought it still was!
