Title: Acute onset full body sweating (not menopause) and HD
Post by: 4thsiblingondialysis on June 17, 2011, 09:57:54 AM
Hi everyone...haven't been online for a bit...went through a lot of the topics and didn't see much about my subject so I was hoping someone could help me.  I've been on HD for 8 months now due to PKD...over the last I'd say three months, every day at least 2 or 3 times, all of a sudden I get acute onset full body sweating that lasts about 5 minutes.  I asked my kidney doctor why this was happening...he said "cuz you are a hot chick!" and walked on to another patient at the center.  I couldn't believe my ears!

Anyway, so can anyone tell me why this is happening?  I was thinking that since I do dialysis at 9 in the morning and I take all of my medications prior to dialysis, perhaps it's because dialysis is cleaning out my thyroid medication that I take for hypothyroid...is that a possibility?  I'd really appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

How frustrating it must be to get such a response from your nephrologist.  Is he always this glib when you approach him with concerns?  Hopefully, someone on here who has also experienced this condition will be able to give you some suggestions.

Okay, I know you said it wasn't menopause - but have you gone to the gyno anyhow?  My sis was getting crazy menopause symptoms at 42, but her blood work said she wasn't in early-onset.  Turns out it was a small, non-cancerous mass on her uterus.  Once it was removed, all the funky hot flashes and insomnia vanished.  (We get so many side-effects with ESRD, it's easy to forget that we can have other causes, too!)

Also, check with whichever doc prescribes the thyroid drugs.  See what his take is on how the meds would react to D.

And for the fool neph.... :Kit n Stik;

PKD ... do you still have significant urine output? How's your blood pressure? I know I can experience full body sweating when my blood pressure is low from getting too dry.

I get sweats like that, the neph at the center says it is your body's systems coming back on line in some way.

Kitkatz, can you you explain to me a little bit more what that means?

I'm guessing it's the idea that the machine can only pull fluid from your bloodstream.  You end every session with an imbalance of fluid levels - more in your tissue than in your blood, no matter how well the machine works, because the body usually can't shift fluid from tissue to blood fast enough to keep up with the machine.   The body reacts when the fluid is pulled from the blood stream too fast by "crashing" - perhaps it's a reaction to having fluid shift back in instead?

Why could it not be hormone related?

I'm a guy but I get these as well. Mostly when my bp was low, and another time it was because my hemoglobin was high

I have PKD and I get them when my blood pressure gets too low. I usually try to eat ice or have the shut the UF off for a bit until they subside. Hope you can get this figured out...

The neph told me my systems were beginning to get up and go again. He also said sweating is a good sign, means the body systems are waking up. I did not sweat for nine to ten years.  On Nocturnal D my body seems to have decided sweating is a good thing, but then it could be hormonal, too.
