Title: Must be something in the air...low k...high k...??WTH???
Post by: looneytunes on May 23, 2011, 01:42:26 PM
Hubs and I just got home (really just minutes ago) from another trip to the hospital which is 100 miles from here.  Friday he was fine and then he wasn't.  Had hooked up to run his D and about 30 minutes into the run, he started chilling, no fever, BP crashed and I couldn't get  it stable with saline infusions.  Got him to the ER. they diagnosed sepsis and it took several hours to stabilize his BP though it was still very low (88/37 at one point).  Found his potassium level was at 1.9.  Strange since his labs were done on Monday last and it was normal at that time.  No explanation for the sudden change but got some IV potassium to get it back to the normal range.  Our neph suspected he had another round of the staph infection going on but no catheter to blame this time around (this is round #5).  Cultures did not grow out anything though the neph says that it could still have been the staph and just not showing up.  So...after 3 days of IV antibiotics, sent home with oral antibiotics to take for the next 2 weeks.  And told we have to wait until it shows up again and if they can grow it out of a culture then they can start looking to see where in his body it has found a home.  But until then, nothing else can be done....

So...I'm with TX....tired and stressed!

Oh Looney, my goodness. It must be in the air. That's all I can say lol. Sorry you had to go through all that and I can't believe your 100 miles from the hosp. Wow!   Low pressure is a symtom of sepsis. I can see why it took him a while to get stabilized. I'm learning K has a little mind of it's own the way it moves in and out of cells. Had he been vomiting or dirahhea? Do you know why the low K?   I think we need to unstress ourselves big time! Hope  your husband gets well soon and feeling better!

Looney, Looney, Looney, what can I say?  Life with this Disease "bites" as you are well aware of.  So sorry you and hubby are going through this.  You'll be going along real fine for a while and BOOM!!!  It rears it's ugly head again.  It never ends, sad to say!  Just know that we are right here with you through it all!

Nock on wood I've never had high k but low k. I had a rapid hartbeat and I remember my center kept blaming it on stress when really my k was 2.0 this after a weird EKG
