Title: Bleeding tongue
Post by: WfMonkey on May 14, 2011, 06:49:29 PM
So Saturday is my favorite day because I get to take a nap in the afternoon without feeling guilty. This afternoon I lay down and had just drifted off when I felt a sharp pain on my tongue, followed by a strange taste in my mouth. I open my eyes to see red on the pillow and realize my mouth is full of blood. By the time I got to the bathroom I realized my tongue was bleeding profusely. I put pressure on it and got it to stop bleeding, but I would guess I lost about a shot glass worth of blood in a couple of minutes.

The tip of my tongue had a bright purple welt swollen to about the size of a pea. 4 hours later it has almost gone away, just a vague discoloration on my tongue. It hasn't bled again and no longer hurts (just a bit sore). Any ideas what this could be? Only thing I can think of is perhaps a blood vessel burst in my tongue? I take a lot of blood pressure medications; could this be a side effect?

I'm guessing it's not serious because it seems to be healing incredibly fast, I'm just curious as to what it was...

Any chance you bit your tongue as you were drifting off? I know that sometimes my jaw kind of "jerks" when I am falling asleep. I've been lucky so far not to bite myself too badly.

I don't think I bit my tongue; there isn't really a cut, more of a bump. I did wonder if I could have been bitten by a spider, but I never really find spiders in my house, plus I don't think I sleep withy tongue hanging out of my mouth!

I have no idea what this is. But, if it happened again, I think I would be out the door heading to ER!!

If you didn't bite your tounge, and this enough to concern you, personally I would have a doctor check it out.  I worked for a dentist a while back and I came to learn to things regarding the tounge can reflect many other things going on with the body.  It can't hurt to get checked but I hope it is minor and quickly goes away for.
