Title: Fluid retention from Norvasc
Post by: Deanne on April 14, 2011, 03:49:44 PM
My neph increased my dose of Norvasc. When my dose went from 10 mg/day to 15 mg/day, I had a bit of swelling in my legs later in the day, but it wasn't too bad. Then she increased my dose to 20 mg/day. My feet turned into watermelons. She dropped my dose back down to 10 mg/day and is adding in an additional blood pressure control medication. In the meantime, I'm still a bit waterlogged. Any guesses on how long it might take to get back to "normal?" I was hoping lasix would take care of it in just one day, but I guess I was being a bit too optimistic.

Deanne, I feel your pain.  I just started taking 5mg a day just a few days ago, and I now have cankles.  Granted, my kidneys have taken a huge dive in function, but the cankles started only after I started the Norvasc.  NOT happy...

I don’t take tablets to get rid of the water,
because I want to keep to a minimum the amount of tablets I take
as I think this will be better for my pre-dialysis kidneys in the long term.

But I do have asparagus every day which acts as a perfect diuretic.
One has to be careful to calculate the potassium etc of asparagus and also not to overdo it.
I don’t want my body getting used to the asparagus, because it might seize to act as a diuretic.

Google "Norvasc" and you'll find real sites that mention leg swelling is a sometimes-occurring side effct of Norvasc. Tell your doctor, as the advice goes.  There are other bp control meds out there -- hundreds -- that may be a better "fit" for your biochemistry.  Don't just stop taking it, however, as calcium channel blockers are a therapy for  CKD.   I've had lots of meds switched on dr.'s advice.

Thanks for your suggestions. It's better now. My neph dropped my dose back down to 10 mg and it just took a week or so for the cankles to subside. There's still some puffiness and some days are worse than others, but it isn't very bothersome anymore, so I'm going to leave it alone for now. I get so tired of switching my meds around all the time that I'd rather live with the slight inconvenience of puffy ankles for a while than make yet another change.

I'm just thinking that wearing the stockings may be helpful. Of course it might be your meds atthe root of the problem, but I think they help your feet/legs feel a little better in the mean time from sweling
