Title: I got put in my place today !
Post by: KICKSTART on March 24, 2011, 05:16:55 PM
There are a few of us at D that when placed near each other like to chat. (most are elderly on our unit and just like to sleep or dont bother speaking) Well today 4 of us where in beds beside and opposite one another. 2guys , one old , one young and my friend ..a lady twice my age but sharp as a razor and a hoot ! When she is having a down day , i cheer her up and vice versa, we are good for each other. Anyway all four of us where having a good old chat The older chap is very funny and had us in stitches with some of his tales , the younger guy is a bit shy but comes out of himself when he gets with us. So all this made D pass a lot more quickly , till one of the staff came round and told us all to be quiet. So it looks like we have to go in , do our D in silence then go home. The thing is we are all good for one another, we share problems , we laugh and we socialise ! I expect on saturday we will all be in the far corners of the room, split up. 4 more miserable people at D !

KS it is such a shame that you aren't allowed to have 'fun' at D.  I agree that talking and sharing makes the time go more quickly. At the unit I was at, I loved to hear people laughing and cracking jokes, and joined in if I could - it seemed to lessen the horror of it all for me. (I'm now back on PD). I hope you don't get seperated. Maybe they'll move you closer so you won't have to talk so loud!

Oh, for pete's sake.  Really?  You're not allowed to enjoy a conversation now?  Or you're supposed to have it in sign language so you don't disturb anyone?  The staff having a hard time hearing their soap on the telly?

Yeesh.

Although I do know a couple of signs I would have flipped at the nurse.....  >:D

 You guys were probably having a good time talking and was just too loud for their comfort.... like a library  things need to be toned down.....

I wouldn't take it too seriously... and I would continue to talk and share things with the others....

Oh that's just too stupid.  I hate your clinic, KS, I really do.  Such a wet weekend.

That's just stupid.  Did they at least give a socially acceptable reason like, "We need to be able to hear the alarms?"   :banghead;

I would ask them if they would like to trade places with you and see if they would like to be in Your Time Out!  Maybe you would like to watch the "telly" as jbeany so rightfully indicated. The very nerve of these people just chaps my (well you get the picture)!

that sucks! my clinic is nothing like that....we yell across the floor at each other...and the techs are loud and joke alot too...it really makes dialysis go by faster and a little more entertaining. ..but then again most of our techs except maybe one are younger..did they tell you why you needed to quiet down? maybe it wasn't the techs fault..maybe another patient complained about the talking....who knows? that still stinks though

I agree with Tyefly.  Keep the conversationn going, but maybe tone it down a bit?  I would NEVER allow staff to treat me like a child.  EVER!  And, let the charge nurse or unit administrator know as well.

While KS's Unit has taken things to the extreme, my expectations for a facility don't include being entertained.  I expect the staff to act professionally and provide quality care.  That's not going to happen while everyone is yelling across the floor and joking around.

KS I really think it is spooky. Can it be possible that there are 2 such similar units across the world from each other.?????????? I have (yet again) the excact same issue as you do.

What is wrong with these people. DON'T THEY CARE??!  :rant;

There was no yelling across the floor at our unit , just 4 people chatting about life , food and things we have done !

Don't let that stop you (I'm sure it won't). Next time the staff starts getting loud, you all should say "shhhhh!"

There shouldn't be any "rules" like this where people have to be for so very long. Ridiculous.  :cuddle;

Whats wrong with a little entertainment at work. As long as people respect one another! This is not work for people who need D, it is part of what they do to keep going! I personally dont want to work if I can not love what I do or have fun doing it! I do understand that things can & will be overdone in excess, but it can be maintained to more moderation.
I think more clinics are easing up on things, cause they realize that these patients are not at work, this is part of their daily lives. The in center he went to was more "running behind" all the time due to this & that, but they had fun and were quite professional in doing so!
Just my take on things! :twocents;

The thing is we wont get a choice , they will put us all so far away from each other we would have to shout out loud across the room. They have done this before and usually pair me up with the most cantankerous old man on the unit (no im not being unkind!) I once asked him if he minded the lights going down in the corner we were in because of it hurting my eyes. No he said i WANT the lights on , i want to read, so the lights have to be left on ...10 mins later he was fast asleep snoring his head off ! So the staff dimmed the lights for me , when he woke up he went mad saying why where the lights down . Oh well headphones and a dvd for me on saturday !

Yea I understand there are different people with different view and all! But sometimes, KS, we just have to be the Bigger person here and let it ride! You know what I mean? Is it right? Probably not, but It is what I would do and have done in many situations that come along! I may not have wanted to, but I did! And just dropped it!
Who knows, maybe some where down the road, that individual may thank you for his ugliness towards you & thank you for putting up with his behavior, and he just might become your best friend.  You never know what your kindness may bring you!!!!

Ack, Kickie!  They're grumpy folk at your unit.  Maybe you could devise some sort of sign language/hand gestures to keep yourselves amused.  When they know you're gabbing about them non-verbally they'll put you all back together because they'll hate not knowing what's amsuing you so much.

 ;D

Good Lord, Im so glad we are doing Nxstage at home. I so do not like going to Centers with him. Yes, they are there if you need them and I agree, they serve a purpose!  But I do not MISS the Center experiences that hubby had with them.
I really wish everyone could D at home whether it be PD or Hemo.  I strongly recommend this Nxstage (if eligible) to you hemo patients. And yes if you want it bad enough, it can be done by the patient, but it will be much more difficult, and you would not be allowed to do it yourself if Nxstage felt like you couldnt do it.
Well I think Im on the wrong thread for NxStage, but I got to tell you this little Machine is a sweet little puppy, I tell you what! KS, if you werent transplant eligible, I would beg you to at least try this on your own!  You would be amazed at what it can do and if I may add, it does what you tell it to do.  Ah ha, you had not heard that about Nxstage huh?
But in your case, I would try PD first because of the transplant issue. But if you do go to see if you are eligible for a transplant, try this Nxstage. If it doesnt work out, so what, you tried and it just wasnt meant to be. By the way, why is it good for people to do hemo incenter and be eligible for a transplant, PD I understand cause it is not so hard on Kidneys, but if hemo incenter and hemo at home are all dealing with blood, where is the differents when it comes to where you do hemo? In regards to the transplant issue that is.

I have seen many announcements since 2009 about NxStage and Kimal partnering in the UK - only one guy has tried it?
Here's the company info - maybe they could tell you more about availability http://www.kimal.co.uk/nx-stage-home-haemo.htm

Thanks for the info but ive already been told (although im more than capable, probably due to doing pd) I would not be considered for home hemo because im on my own and protocol says you need someone there. Funny i hear that word 'protocol' alot !

Would you opt for home hemo if you had a training partner?

Do you know im not sure because if i did i would probably become a recluse ! Hemo is the only thing that gets me out of the house. Not because im lazy or anything but doing stuff on your own isnt that much fun.

I can understand that.  My mom hated having to go to a clinic, but she did rather enjoy the company.

You had a good period of time, as I recall, where you were able to go horseback riding - is that something you could go back to?

Does anyone know why someone who is on a list for transplantation can go to a clinic for hemo dialysis, but not recommended for hemo at home?

Oh i ve thought about that loads. The trouble is its far to expensive now for me . I dont want lessons as im as qualified instructor myself and to hire a horse for half a day trekking is nearly as expensive as keeping your own. Nothing in the UK is cheap as far as horses are concerned.

Not to hijack KS's post - but munchkin, there's a lot more involved in doing your own hemo treatments than there is in taking care of your transplant.  You have to have the space to the machine and supplies, the physical ability to handle the supplies, the ability to keep the area as clean and sterile as possible, the coping skills to handle the needles and treatment care, and usually, a spouse or partner who is willing and able to do the process with you.
