my husband has had the hiccups for 24 hours-they stop periodically for an hour here and there,but the rest of the time they are quite violent,they are wearing him out.
Obviously gulping water is not an option-he has tried sips,and holding his breath,and eating bread....any other ideas?

According to Guinness the longest recorded attack of hiccupping was 69 years and 5 months. Charles Osboune (1894-1991) began hiccupping in 1922 and hiccupped every 1 1/2 second until a morning a February 1990. He died only a year and a bit later on May 1st 1991.
And you thought having them for a few hours was bad!

This site has a few "cures" maybe give some a try!

I have never used fluid for my hiccups. All I do is take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds, and then breathe out very slowly. This calms the spasms in the diaphram that cause the hiccups in the first place ;) :thumbup;
Of course I MUST say I have never had them as bad as he has :(
Oh cool! That link is really cool reading! Thanks! :thumbup; :thx;
SUCK ON THIS
Suck on some crushed ice, try a lemon wedge or a spoonful of peanut butter.
TO BREATHE OR NOT TO BREATHE
Simply holding your breath works for some. Blowing out air in a steady slow stream is a another technique, this relaxes the diaphragm. If you are a runner and find you get shoulder craps you can try the pursed lips and blowing technique as well. Believe it or not the pain in your shoulder could be caused by your diaphragm as the shoulder is one of the closest nerve endings for the diaphragm.

I always cure mine with a spoonful (partial) of granulated sugar~ does the trick everytime for me. Good Luck!

concentrated breathing works for a while-they come back though-I read that link and I googled and read....found one article that said Reglan could be prescribed (among other drugs) which is a stomach sedative he was given for nausea-I gave him a dose of that,hopefully it will work through the night.
And Thanks for the links :thx; :snowman;

you know I found that last night too=ROTFLMAO I told my hubby I could help him out-he didn't think it was funny but I sure did!!!
-
Never would have thought of doing that either. Oh my!
-
Hopefully the problem disappears before taking drastic measures.

he went to the Dr today-he was given Thorazine,that plus the patches of duregesic,plus the ativan- his hiccups have finally went away-I have to watch him though-thats a very dopey mixture.I put him to bed.
He went on dialysis before all his bones were healed from being crushed,and he has been on really heavy medication...sometimes he talks alot of nonsense,he can't drive either. Its killing me I need to get a job one of these days,but I am scared to leave him alone for too long.

Glitter, I hope it all works out for you too, which it will, life, while at the moment your having a bit of a down moment, just means soon there will be an up moment!
That's how I have learnt to look at life.
Let us know how he feels once he wakes up from his medicine cocktail !
Hope you get my sense of humour, it's hard not to offend anybody when your writing not talking, it's hard to express the emotion that your trying to get across with what you say..............................
Anyway keep us posted.

When I have hiccups I use a teaspoon of lemon juice it takes them away instantly but taste disgusting. I have never had hiccups that bad though!
