Title: heart attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: billybags on February 12, 2011, 04:20:30 AM
My husband has not been well for nearly 2 weeks, terrific leg pains, tiredness, not eating, being sick. This was not due to dialysis, his nurse said all his bloods were good. Saw the GP twice and she gave him pain killers and we have an appointment with a physio because his arthritic knee is on the same leg. Friday morning he was sick again and had to lay down , he was sweaty,his pallor was gray, called paramedics who rushed him into cardiac unit. He had had a heart attack. With in 1 hour they had sorted him, put  another stent in his blocked artery and he is now on a ward and doing fine. He had a heart attack 2 years ago and they put two stents in then. What I am saying is please learn as much about heart attacks as you can. Dialysis and heart attacks seem to go together. I  found out that once you have had a heart procedure you are more prone to blood clots. Heart attacks signs are not easy to read , they are very variable, sickness, tiredness, clamminess, leg pains, arm, neck pains, indigestion the list is endless. I thank God that my husband got sorted so quickly.

You must both be so relieved that things got sorted.  Thanks for the reminder about the signs of cardiac trouble.  Hope he improves and stays well.  :grouphug;

You're right about heart attack symptoms being very variable. Sometimes it's only a blood test that shows up a heart attack.

The pain of my last heart attack was in my guts. I would have expected it in my chest, but there you go. Luckily the paramedic that responded to the emergency call treated it as a heart attack and I was OK eventually.

Thanks every one for your well wishes, husband doing OK, still hooked up and being monitored but he looks so much better.

Stoday, that is where my husband had the pain , in his gut. We are so glad the paramedic realized it was a heart attack and not gastro.

It seems like not all symptoms are the same with everyone. if you don't feel right get checked out. I have been to the ER several times for nothing but I would rather do that then the alternative. Glad your husband is on the mend billybags.

Yes, so glad you got him to the hospital in time. As everyone else has said, the symptoms can be many and varied. And, far better to go to the hospital and have nothing be wrong, than not going and finding it was serious. Like when they are doing your autopsy.

Dialysis and heart attacks seem to go together.
They certainly do.

Your chance of getting a heart attack is increased by roughly 300% once you're on dialysis.  Partly that's due to the kidney failure, partly it's due to the chronic inflammation caused by the dialysis.

Oh, Billybags, how frightening! You and your husband are both in my thoughts. And thank you for the reminder that heart attack symptoms aren't always just the classic chest pain.

Well, I got him home from the hospital to-day, and bless him he looks cream crackered.Give him a few days rest and some good home cooking and he will be fine. I had to smile, while he was in hospital they said his potassium was really low. So he has had to eat bananas, crazy , you are told to watch your potassium. whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I hope your husband recovers well and remember at any small thing like that to get it checked out.  When I was 35 years old, I had my first heart attack.  I didn't experience really any signs but just chest pain.  I had stents put in and I had another heart attack in 2008 at Christmas time. I don't like going to the hospital via ambulance and I was dead asleep and Jennifer was watching tv.  I awoke sudden saying call 911.  I knew I was having another heart attack.  They sent me to ECMC in Buffalo, an hour and half away.  They doctors there weren't sure what they wanted to do to me.  After 2 weeks, they sent me home.  A few days later, I had another heart attack.  A doctor at ECMC finally said he'd take my case and they did a quad bypass.  It was hard to recover and I will never go through that again. That was the worst pain and recovery I ever had.  The doctors knew I needed it, but none wanted to take my case because of all my health problems due to my diabetes.  It's not easy.

DarkSoul0703, It is so scary, husband had heart attack 2/3 years ago,had  two stents inserted, it was a blockage before one of the  stents that caused this attack.So now he has two stents to-gether one after the other, it is scary in as much as the arteries are furring up so quickly.We are doing all we can diet wise exct. It is probably the kidney disease, old age and medication.I do not know. He is not recovering as quickly as he did 3 years ago, but then he was younger and not on dialysis.Any way welcome to the site. :welcomesign;

Oh Billy that is so scary! You must have been a wreck. I certainly would have been. You did the right thing getting the paramedics. You are so right about learning all you can. A heart attack can present itself in many ways.Another symptom I didn't see metioned is an incredible thirst. Men and women can have different symptoms too. I used to think it would ALWAYS be a chest pain w/ numbness in the left arm. Now I may be way off on this but I think that phosopourus can build up in the arteries? Something along those lines.You said theyare furrying up so quick. I'm sorry you both are going through this. Dialysis is enough to handle right? Glad to hear he is home now.Take good care of both yourselves.

Here we go again, hubby has not been well since he came out of the heart unit last Monday, aches ,pains, breathlessness, feeling sick you name it he has it.Thursday renal nurse came out to take bloods, thank goodness and found out he is anemic his iron had dropped from 19 (UK) to 4 I am surprised he is still walking about bless him, so I am sitting here waiting for a call to take him in for transfusion. No wonder he is feeling rough, we thought it was the new beta blocker.

aww gee, I feel bad that this has come about. Hopefully the transfusion will help. Billy, it just always seems like it's something doesn't it? Not only for you but for your husband as well. Do you know why he has become anemic? Has he ever been so low he's needed a transfusion before? The kidney failure? From the suregry? I "think" I kinda know he sorta feels with the anemia & feeling so fatigued/exhausted. I once was on a medication that did that to me. The shortness of breath was the worst. You feel like you just don't want to move. Urgghh.. Scrolling it says now that his numbers are ok & going to see Neph. He's lucky to have you!
