Title: What would your neph want?
Post by: MooseMom on January 18, 2011, 11:32:30 PM
Have any of you had a read of some of the many websites and blogs about CKD and/or dialysis?  More than one blogger has suggested that as we decide what modality might suit us best, we should ask our nephs how THEY would want to receive dialysis if their kidneys failed.  I doubt they'd ever request incenter hemo 3xweekly like we have now in the US.  Have any of you asked your own neph this question?  I haven't, but I think I may.  I think that might be a very good standard by which to measure the efficacy of treatment...what would your neph want for him/herself?

If any of you DO get the opportunity to ask, I'd be very interested in any replies.

PS...here's a partial reply, taken from a link posted by noahvale in another IHD thread about a dialysis pioneer...

My nephrologist believes that transplantation offers the best chance of living a normal life and would try to get one before having to go on dialysis for any extended period of time.  And, if he had to (reluctantly) go on dialysis....he would set up a machine in his office.  Would not want it in his home life.

b

you then ask them "is this feasible " for me
YES/NO, why
take it from there

I adore and respect the hell out of my pre transplant nephrologist, as he diagnosed me and I was with him from day 1 (diagnosed in 1993).  I totally wanted to know what he would do if he were in my shoes and he said other than transplant, which was our plan from the beginning, he said home hemo.   When he and I discussed what he thought might be a better option for me, being that I didn't want to start with home hemo for multiple reasons, he suggested nocturnal.  And that's what were were planning to do up to the point of transplant.  He is the lead physician/nephrologist the nocturnal dialysis unit downtown and he was reserving me a chair from March 2008 until I transplanted in Nov 2008.  I didn't allow him to release the chair until my transplant was deemed a success.  lol  He was more than happy to do it.

I love my pre transplant neph!  I hope I never have to see him again!   :clap;

My neph is very honest, and always says he would do PD. He seems to think PD is the best.

He said he would do home dialysis, big fan of pd, and nxstage.

My neph would just list all the things he expects me to do (as his own preference)
