Title: My homework assignment RE: Etta's Gift
Post by: jbeany on December 07, 2010, 01:36:11 PM
Kelly graciously gave me permission to use her charity fund, Etta's Gift as the basis for one of my course assignments.  It's my final project in a computer spreadsheet course - essentially the final exam.  It's due next week, so I'm working on it now and just finished one of the required parts.  I have to use a program included with Excel that is called a Solver.  It calculates the best possible solution when you have multiple variables and gives you the answer.  Well, since I'm doing a report for a charity with a goal of education about organ donations, I ran a simplified formula to calculate how many more donors we would need to get today's waiting list down to 0.  I didn't get to math-involved in the stats about the 19 people a day who die waiting, or the 300 who get added daily - no, just today's numbers.

Here's a pdf of what I came up with - check out the bold red numbers at the bottom - that's how many more deceased and live donors we would need to even come close to a zero, just for today, more than double what we are averaging right now.

Frankly, I'm surprised that there are not more than 109,000 people on the waiting list.

I hope a lot of people will read your paper and will be moved to do something about this.  Thank you.  Well done.

It's one of about a 8 pages I've got going for the assignment - it's just kind of crazy to see the numbers.  I guess what is most depressing is thinking that of the millions of people in the states, we can't get more to agree to be organ donors.  We need less than 8 thousand more donors to make the number zero, but people don't want to take the time to get on the list.

I got 200/200 on it, so I did okay with the info I had!  Once you figure out if you have the computer program, we'll see if we can adapt it to something you can use, instead of just something to meet the project criteria.
