I was so relieved to have my catheter out that I didn't think to ask what to do about my dressing when I shower. All I was told was that I can shower Friday (today) and not to bathe or swim until it scabs over. Those with experience, I don't want to sound dumb but do I take it off, shower and leave it off?

Hi Finding...
Mum's nurse advises her to shower with the dressing on, then remove, dry with sterile gauze or suchlike., and put a dry dressing on if it looks like it needs one... Your own instinct will tell you when it's ready to be left uncovered... If you're not sure, leave it covered for another few days....
God bless....

You are going to get mixed answers on this one. I was told I could remove it when I showered. :) That first shower is awesome!

I was told wait a couple of days, but wait a week for it to really get drenched, I just had the dialysis nurse look at it just to be sure.

If it's stopped oozing completely (no exudate), then it's probably safe to leave the dressing off. Otherwise I would suggest keeping it covered until it really does stop oozing completely.
Besides, if it's still oozing, it could stain your clothing.

It actually never oozed, in fact I think it's already starting to scab so I've been leaving it uncovered. Of course, and go figure, right after it's out they infiltrate my arm and I couldn't do treatment Saturday. :thumbdown;
