I'm scheduling some exams that I have to do in order to get on the transplant list at my center, and the only exam which worries me is the cystoscopy/cystography......anyone have some experience?

What is the procedure? Never heard of it.

I recently had a cystoscopy, either during a urodynamic scan, or during a laparoscopy, which was to work out why I was getting urinary tract infections.
If it was during the urodynamic scan, well that was a doddle. They put a tube up there, but it wasn't very uncomfortable, though it took a couple of goes to get it right I recall. During the urodynamic scan, they put a tube up the urethra, and put lots of water in my bladder, and then got me to do amusing things like jump up and down, squat, andthey put my hand in water. It was to see if I could hold my pee. Then they got me to wee it all out, and measured how much was retained after I'd wee'd. All with the tube in there, I think. I don't think they did the cystocopy then, but he might have, he did have the tube there already and there was a cystoscopy planned.
But possibly it happened while I was under general for the laparoscopy, in which case I can't tell you anything about it.
At any rate my feedback is that getting the thing put in your urethra without any pain killers wasn't that bad. I wonder if it would be less comfortable for boys, if you see what I mean. Hope this helps, its not very clear I know. It was my first set of procedures ever and I was a bit overwhelmed really.

I remember way back when they put the tube up into my bladder and then like LEFT me for their lunch break or something and THEN they made me move rooms and I had to WALK to the other room and she was like leading me like a cow (with the tube). Then they fill my bladder with water and then I have to stand and pee in a thing about as big as a pop bottle and I remember it got my socks all wet and I was so humiliated. Of course this was when that was the worst thing that had ever happened to me. :)
I remember being mad at my Mother for having me! :waving;

I never had one but just by reading that I'd want a general, having a local inserted in there does not sound good.

My huband has had many of these & I had one myself. I think it depends on the reason of the scope whether you are sedated or just in the Doctors office. Mine was in the office, they just wanted to visually check my bladder. Franks had both in office & in operating room. I did not even realize the scope had passed into me as the sensation of the water was all I felt. :shy;
I have been with Frank in the offie havng hs. He did make a face for a split second then was fine once the scope was past a certain point. Naturally if biopsies are involved it would be done sleepy drugs .
I wouldn't worry too much about this one Phil , either way you should not have pain involved.

I had a couple of cystoscopies.
They weren't any big deal. The only real discomfort I experienced was when they had to push the tube past my enlarged prostate, which had constricted my urethra at that point.
Believe me, cystoscopy is no problem at all.

Thankyou everybody.....we'll see how it goes next week! :D

Hi...I have a cystoscopy done every 3/6 months when I have my kidney stent changed. They put me under "twilight" sleep and I never feel a thing.....

I first had a cystoscopy back when I about 14. The first time they did the test it was done under general but the second time a few days later it was done in the O.R. without anything for pain. I was in excruciating pain that they had to put me under after several tries. They tried doing the test while in the hospital about 4 years back. I wa in pain then when they had to stop. Last year the transplant coord, ordered up the test but he wrote on orders cst or something like that. I got to the hospital for xrays and ultrasounds. When they came to get me for the last test I asked the nurses what was the test and she said cystoscopy I turned around and left the hospital. I already told the transplant doctor about my bad experiences. They told me it has to be done. I know it has to be done but I need something for the pain. I will have to ask the neph about it.

I had a Cystoscopy performed about 40 years ago At Mt. Sinai Hosp. (N.Y.). They used no pain
killers or sedation. After pumping me up with water (using a small tube) they made me hold it in until
I thought I would bust. Then I was told I could let it go and I tried my best to hit The Neph with it.
After the small tube was removed they came at me with the Cystoscopy Tube. They must have
lost the actual Cystascope because what they used looked to be the Flagpole from the front of the
Hospital. Boy did I scream and carry on. After a short time in my most menacing voice (with fire coming
out of my nose), I told the Neph. that if he did not take that thing out of me I would take it out
myself and stick it up his rectum after which I would kill him.
I'm sure that the proceedure used today is much better.
