Our nurse comes out and takes bloods once a month. She came yesterday and took them, to -day she phoned up and was really pleased about them and said "you can treat yourself" bless her, :sir ken; how nice. I did not tell her we actually "spoilt " our selves after she had left with the bloods. We had sausage and fried onion rolls for lunch and enjoyed every bit. How many of you "SPOIL" your selves now and again? :clap;
-
Me!! :yahoo;
-
And me!
-
No one else is going to! We have to spoil ourselves once in awhile. :2thumbsup;
-
guilty your honour. I think everyone knows that's how it works. I've had nurses even say "Well you had your monthly bloods last week, so if you want a little bit of chocolate.. go ahead!" and stuff like that. So yeah, I have maybe "celebrated" my monthlies by having a coke or something (ooh, yeah, I know how to party hard! :rofl;) but at the same time I also know that it's not something to get carried away with. There's no point being good just for some labs, and naughty the rest of the time - I hardly want the call to come and then have them tell me well no my potassium is through the roof or something.....
-
THREE WEEKS OF BEING A LITTLE BIT NAUGHTY. ONE WEEK OF BEING VERY VERY GOOD! ;D Thats always been the Kevno way.!
-
I get weekly bloods for the time being, so I can be naughty once a week! :yahoo;
-
Dare i say.. Mikes always treating himself. Or should i say, eats whatever he wants.. within reason of corse :oops;
-
Guilty:-) I had my bloods drawn on Tuesday....and im going camping this weekend....gonna have to not be TOO naughty! :bandance; :rofl;
-
Oh no, not me, I would never cheat on my wonderful and fulfilling renal diet which is loaded with tons of delicious food. :sarcasm;
-
Oh yeah. I had a full glass of milk and a Snickers bar last night. :2thumbsup;
I figured since I was NPO all day today, I could swing it.
-
My unit does not schedule the blood tests ... so they can happen almost anytime.
But my diet is very "open" as my potassium is low.
-
One Mickey D's frozen Caramel Frappa' a week.......
And other bad stuff now and again.......
-
I try to follow a diet that is good for my transplant, since it's only for my good and my health. I have eaten junky stuff this week and had two iced lattes all week, but bad food is not my regular diet, and It is no accident that my twice-weekly labs are so good! :bandance; :yahoo; :clap;
-
baskin-robbins yeah
-
Early on I was given the advice that if your are going to cheat, do it right after they pull blood for labs. I tried it. I forget what I had the day after they pulled blood but the very next day when I went in I was told there was a problem and they were going to have to re-draw my blood. :oops; I guess it would be better to cheat the day you get your results!
-
Knowledge is Power!
YLGuy, of everyone, you got the best information of all - you "cheated" the day before blood was drawn. You now know just what effect your indulgence is going to have on your body and can adjust up accordingly.
It is not cheating, it is everything in moderation. Live life!
We have ice cream and candy here. We adjust up with both the insulin and binders. We have bananas and platanos, but we spread them out and never have too many between any two dialysis sessions. But, we never adjust up because bloodwork is due. If we did, we wouldn't know how we were doing. I find it very disturbing that the dieticians encourage people to cheat on the blood test.

I hadn't treated myself to anything since I was first diagnosed with kidney disease. (Even before my kidneys failed completely, I put myself on a very strict diet to delay dialysis as long as possible.)
My social worker and even my neph have actually been pushing me to take a break and enjoy myself at a nice restaurant. (It was my social worker who pushed me into going to that college reunion I had posted about.)
I think they're concerned that all the restrictions of the dietary regimen have turned me into some kind of obsessive-compulsive.
-
Hi RightSide, its good to let your self go now and again. There must be some thing that you really would like to eat.
-
Being on PD I spoil myself every day. The one thing we tell our Kidney Beings attendees is that the one time you can definitely go off your diet is right after your lab draw for the month, cuz you have 30 days to get it right for next time!
-
yes that is my trick as well. I usually wait until the day of my labs and then spoil myself by eating cheese. Being on PD, I have a much liberal diet! The phos isnt a problem for me because 95% of the phos foods I dont like. Never will eat beans, creamy stuff, hate milk, ect. But cheese is a weaknesss.
Being that I am stuck doing ALL of the cooking at home. I have more a of aproblem finding all the indregrints(sp) for a recipe that Iwant then avoiding food I cant have.

The diet is restrictive but it is also important to *live life* and part of that is enjoying the odd treat - within limits and in moderation. No point killing yourself to stay alive if you can't enjoy your life at all. That's my view.
-
My god, I do not realize that your HD guys have to "spoil" yourselves after each lab... I eat whatever I like EACH DAY, no any restriction. I guess this is one of the big reasons to go with PD.
-
Me? Never! I cheat but within reasonablel range.
-
Dare i say.. Mikes always treating himself. Or should i say, eats whatever he wants.. within reason of corse :oops;
Yep, Blokey too.
;D
-
Ive given up ! because according to my unit im NAUGHTY full stop ! >:D
-
Your not naughty are you!!!!!!!!!!!! How are things going for you at the moment?
-
Dont ask ! Just hope your Alan has settled into it better than i have ?
-
Hi RightSide, its good to let your self go now and again. There must be some thing that you really would like to eat.
Where I live, it's been so hot lately that if I'm going to treat myself to anything, it's extra fluid.

What do you reakon he's worst with?
Mike is a bakery pie man. I often think *GAAH Sodium!* but his bloods are perfect & he's never overloaded. Must be my cooking then ;)

My favorite food is steak.
But I'm allowed that on the renal diet anyway.

Sneaky bastages.. *LOL*

you do have to have some fun sometime. Even if you don't cheat on your diet, you shouldn't stop yourself from going out and doing stuff.
My unit does the bloods the first Monday and Tuesday of the month. For August, I'm going away to Ottawa for a Michael Buble concert that weekend. I could have some fun. *G*
When I go to NYC I usually try to get an ice cream that's not availible in Canada. It's Ben and Jerry's Americone Dream. It was created for Stephen Colbert a few years ago and it is REALLY good. That's probably my biggest treat, and I only get that once a year.

My wife started cooking all organic foods at home, and it seems that this allows me to pretty much eat what I want all the time. She cooks with lots of heavy cream, cheese and butter for most of our meals; however, my labs are consistently good. We usually have a cookout every week, where I do barbecue chicken, ribs, burgers and kielbasa sausage. Of course, no cookout is complete without my patented baked beans. The only problem that I've consistently had is keeping fluid intake under control. Especially since my Dr. put me on Warfarin.
Here's the secret:
1) No high fructose corn syrup whatsoever. This poison doesn't just throw off your blood sugar: it totally screws up your metabolism.
2) Cook everything from scratch--preferably using organic ingredients. This way, you have better control over what you're putting into your body. You'll avoid all the MSG, phosphates and preservatives.
For example: Although it's easier to cover your ribs and chicken with store-bought barbecue sauce, I make my own sauce. That way, there's no added salt or high fructose syrup. Plus, it only takes a couple of minutes to make.
I'm not really on a "dialysis diet." I'm just eating healthy. My phosphorus and calcium levels are spot on, and my last albumin was 5, so my scam is working. This is the "IHD Cheat Every Day UN-diet!"
-
how do you eat heavy cream, cheese, and butter every day and not have a high phosphorus level?
-
I have a problem keeping my calcium up.. they told me to take Tums 1000mg a day.. anyone use anything els to boost your calcium?
