Title: does any one know why...
Post by: caringpct on May 10, 2010, 07:04:51 PM
Does anyone know why a transplanted kidney is placed in the lower front part of the abdomen instead of taking out one of the non-functioning kidneys and placing it with the donated one?

I haven't been able to get a real answer any where.

Ease of access for attaching to the bladder, I think.

Yes, ease of access.  Otherwise they would have to break your ribs and take out your old one and replace the new one and then if you have problems they would have to go back in.

This way they put it in your pelvic area and the plumbing is all right there.  It is easy to biopsy right there too.

Disadvantages are vulnerable to blows in sports or seatbelt injuries.

Unless your kidneys are necrotic, it's more trouble than it's worth to remove the old kidneys.  I have a friend with 5 kidneys!

It also reduces pain, if they were to remove the old one you would have more pain then you are in in the first place.

If you have renal cancer, the kidney will likely be removed as soon as possible.
