Title: about being a kidney doner
Post by: boswife on May 06, 2010, 09:20:35 PM
I dont think i spelled that right (doner?) but anyway, i have reciently become one upon death. (even though that seems so right, it kind of still creaps me out in a way) Soooo, since i see so many here needing one, is that something that a person can sort of dedicate their organs to certain people without getting crazy with it.  I mean it would be nice if you could have a list or something as to where you'ld like them to go.

You should let your family know your wishes, and write it down. In the event you qualified as a donor (brain-dead due to accident or other illness/incident) and your family directs your organs to a specific individual, it can be done. That's how Natalie Cole got her transplant, a fan's family requested that the donor's kidney be directed to her.

I can't stress this enough to people who want to become voluntary organ donor . Agreeing to donate your organs and having it on your license will not make you an instant donor. It may sound odd, but you are assumed to not be a donor (even with it on your license) unless the family member/person responsible represents/knows your wishes.

I've always though this was a bit backwards and feel people should automatically become donors unless they let their objections be known. Imagine how many donors we would have!

The law's quite logical: someone has to own the body. Since you're not around anymore (ha! ha!) it "belongs" to your relatives. Well, that's what I understand to be the case in the UK.
