Ok, so I *KNOW* what I am supposed to eat and not eat... I have a million posters and list's up the ying yang with high potassium and phosphorus foods.. and from my point of view.. theres not much I can eat. (As far as what i like and allowed to have..) So I try to eat whatever I want, (with obvious limits such as no milk and limit dairy and such..) take my binders like candy and limit portions..to very small. Obviously this aint working too well as my phosphorus still is high. What do you guys eat for snacks that are yummy??
-
3 or 4 Arrowroot cookies.
A couple of tablespoons of Marshmallow Fluff.
A small container of Jello.
-
Graham Crackers with Honey.
-
Joe likes the small cans of pears. I think those aren't too terrible on potassium. Apples are good too.
-
:( I'm not great help here...I'm allowed to eat whatever I want....my phosphates are low...so I need to drink more milk and cheese, chocolate, etc....sorry I can't help.
-
I *love* jello... I did read the ingredients and I see phosphorus in there.. so I figured I couldnt have alot of it... I eat sugar-free jell-o... and if I knew I could have a lot of it, I would eat it a lot more, I like it and its no calories, perfect.. with some cool-whip... lol... So, how much phosphorus is in it since its in the ingredients?

Are you on dialysis? (Sorry I dont remember every person's situation yet, im still learning about everyone..) If so, which kind hemo or PD? Your lucky to have low phos, and are able to eat lol... I can only dream :P
-
Yes am on dialysis for about 5 months now...although it feels like an eternity. I do home hemo, 5 days a week, 4 hours. One of my main problems is that I feel very tired most of the time...because my hemoglobin is 90 or so. Using Aramesp to catch up.
Most of the time I'm not even hungry....
-
Gelatin desserts, KRAFT, JELL-O Brand Sugar Free Low Calorie Gelatin Snacks Strawberry, with aspartame and acesulfame potassium sweetener, ready-to-eat
Value per
100 grams
Phosphorus, P mg 0
Potassium, K mg 3
Remember, it counts as fluid.
Check this out for more information, but you must be precise. Write gelatin, not Jello. Have fun!

How is your phos so low? I have never heard of anyone on dialysis having normal or low phos levels to the point there told they can eat phos foods... thats great though! Did they say why your phos is low?

Thanks Zach. I did the search, and looks like the "ready to eat" is way lower in phosphorus, (i assume the ready to eat means the jell-o that comes in the individual containers already to eat)... the kind that u mix with water to make ur own shows me its like 5444/mg per 400 grams (i chose 400 grams b/c that equals about how many unces i eat a day)....and i assume 5444 mg is alot of phosphorus.. so i guess i should start buying the ready to eat individual pakcs instea of making it from the powder?
Im not worried about the fluid part, I can pretty much drink any amount since i'm on PD. Whew!
-
No they gave me no reason...just the blood test results....and I didn't ask :-\....but so far I basically can eat all I want...I'm anemic anyways :lol;
-
well, I don't know if I should be eating everything, but I am! We get lab work done every
two weeks and everything comes out alright(phosphorous,calcium,etc..)so maybe what I'm
asking is it alright to eat everything as long as your labs come out good? and by the way
I feel pretty good.
-
The labs say it all my friend, consider yourself one of the "lucky" ones and enjoy all you can (as long as your labs are good) just make sure you keep checking on them cuz they can change quickly. :beer1;

I found unsalted pretzels in the grocery store. They might be good when you need something crunchy. I don't know how much potassium is in them, but produce sections usually have baby carrots or carrot "chips" ready to eat that would be good with some dip or by themselves.
-
Which store did you find those in girlfriend, the only store that we could ever find them in was Vons and they dont carry them anymore. I love unsalted pretzels :P
-
I have bought them in Publix and Walmart, and I think Winn Dixie also. You probably don't have Publix or Winn Dixie in California though, huh?
(edited to add) They are Snyder's of Hanover brand (pretty popular brand) and they are the "unsalted mini pretzels."
Here's the link: http://www.snydersofhanover.com/en/products.php?cat=1&id=19
Looks like they also have the bigger pretzels in unsalted. :thumbup;
-
I get those same pretzels at winn dixie too-and carrots that are raw are pretty high in potassium aren't they?
I also buy him 4 oz containers of peaches in natural juice-only 90 mg. potassium
and smart-pop no salt popcorn
-
Watch the eating of carrots. There is a lot of natural sugar in them and it can cause sugar rushes and binge eating.
-
Wow! I thought the baby carrots were really healthy. I've been eating them to satisfy my need for crunch.
-
It depends on how you react to the natural sugars in the baby carrots. My family will start binge eating from eating baby carrots. The sugar causes a reaction in the body to overeat. Watch what you are eating after you eat the carrots. Is it carbs you crave after you eat the carrots? Are you over eating after you eat the carrots? My sister, kids and I all will binge eat after eating carrots.
-
8) Step away from the carrots. 8)
-
CARROTS? CARROTS? DID SOMEONE SAY CARROTS?? ;)
-
Step away from the carrots slowly and the rabbit does not get hurt!
-
back to the topic....
i eat all kinds of fruit let them be fresh or in the baby food form....my faves r mango hmmmmmmm... papaya, pears, peaches, apples, etc. if is good for babies well guess what??... is good for me :rofl;

Right now, I'm having black olives and baby green onions for a snack. Low in potassium and phos. The black olives are bit high in salt, but I always rinse them well, so I know I lose a bit of it.
I've been trying to find a replacement for my usual snack of cheese and crackers. Olives are a good start, and the onions give me a bit of zing.
Cheese, cheese, cheese - --- how do I give up cheese? I'm going to start calling for Gromit and muttering about Wensleydale any minute. . .
-
instead of cheese-how about vienna sausages? 55 PO4-114 K -but uh oh---1095 na (salt)
since I am on a diet (to lose weight) and with the renal thing for my honey-we eat mustard and crackers sometimes,or just a plain mustard sandwhich.!

I guess Cream Cheese is better than normal Cheese. I guess it has a lot less Phosphate.
I got that out of the Kidney Friendly Comfort Foods cookbook. Epoman has that book as well from the Renal Prom.

My little dogs LOVE baby carrots. They run away with one like it was a steak bone. The vet says it is okay. I know.....off topic.

I just got a copy of that from my dietitian. The recipes look pretty good. I need to get some limes for the Key Lime Cookies. . .and find my zester which wandered off into the bottom of a drawer somewhere.
And cream cheese is fine, in and of itself, but it's not going to fix my craving for a nice sharp, hard cheese to nibble on. . . *sigh*

You can have some once in awhile but in moderation and WITH your binders .. as long as your blood work says so :P
-
All my blood work is saying right now is NO NO NO! ;D
-
When your chemistries say 'yes,' how about a nice tangy feta cheese. Not the fake ones made in the States (mostly salty--not tangy), but the ones imported from Greece, Israel or France. It's one of the lowest in PO4. Snack on a couple of ounces with a couple of binders. ;)

I am curious as well since I LOVE cheeese, which are all the lowest Phosphate cheeses?

Holy crap that has to be the best most wanted post in all kidney forums! :clap; :2thumbsup; :thumbup;
Thank you for that! Infact, I want to ask, can I quote you for my forum AND another kidney forums? lol !! :clap; :2thumbsup; :thx;

You're making me hungry, glitter! ;D
I've been using a sprinkling of Parmesan on a lot of things lately - a little goes a long way for flavor.
I make my own pizza crust from scratch all the time. That way I can control the toppings and how much sauce I get, but still get to pig out on pizza!
Thankfully, cream cheese is still on the menu, so I can still do dessert pizza, too. Ooooh, yummy!
Crust
1 package rapid rise yeast
1 cup warm water
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2-1/2 cups flour
2 tbsp vegetable oil
dash of salt
Heat oven to 425. Dissolve yeast in warm, not hot, water. Feed yeast with sugar. Add remaining ingredients. Beat vigorously 20 strokes, or knead with hands. Let rest 5 minutes before spreading on pan. Bake until golden brown, approx. 15-20 minutes.
Let cool. Top with 8 oz block of cream cheese whipped together with 1/2 to 1 cup of powdered sugar. Top with sliced fresh fruit of your choosing. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries all hold up well and are reasonably low in potassium. Keep leftovers in fridge.
Wait, I need to go put cream cheese on my shopping list. . ..

Oh wow Oh wow Oh WOW!! I am loving this thread on foods we normally can't have but CAN!! ;) :2thumbsup; :clap; :beer1;

For some reason I eat what I want when I want but in moderation. I've been doing this for the past 5.9 years and my labs tend to stay in the normal range. My phosphrus is good and once in a while my potassium is up a little but I usually know what I've done. My biggest problem is fluid gain...cause I don't pee. I gain between 2.5 to 4 kilos per session depending on what they call a weekend. Any pointers on fluid gain reduction. ???
-
Bluedove, have you seen this thread yet?

here, many talk about their fluid gains :2thumbsup;
