One of my patients asked if it was common to have a cough with phlegm after dialysis. No other patient has told me of anything like that but apparently a few of them have had this occur. (heard a another patient talking to another about it.) Does anyone else have this problem and how can I help prevent it? What causes it?

I do sometimes during dialysis, don't know what causes it.

It seems we always get "assessed" before dialysis and or... check lungs and heart and check ankles. We never get assessed "after" dialysis. You need to listen to their chest and lungs and checks ankles for fluid. There should be little or none. If ankles are still puffy they may need to challenge their dry weight. Lungs should sound clear.
:secret;

Our nurses only will do that for older people.
-
It might be fluid in the lungs from pulling off insufficient fluid during the dialysis session, combined with the sodium profiles actually attracting fluid out of the extremities back into the chest cavity.
Just a guess on my part.

I have had two in-center treatments. Both times I felt great right after the session, but about 5-6 hours later, I "crashed" - felt awful. Is this to be expected?

Just an update: the patient I spoke of is doing better. Spoke with a doctor on his behalf and with the patient with his wife, concluded that it could be allergy issues. Maybe, but I am keeping an eye on it.
tenorman: some of my patients feel the way you describe. It could be your body trying to adjust to dialysis.
