Title: i was thinking...thats never good =P
Post by: angela515 on November 20, 2006, 10:09:25 PM
You know how diabeticsneed t check their sugars, so they have a machine that allows them to do this whenever they want, how ever often they need to or want to... and from home by themselves. Wouldn't it be awesome if they had a machine for our use at home to just prick our finger or whatever and check our phosphorus levels? I dont know if it is even possible to do, or if thats a blood test that is more complex.. but I thought it was a good thought and would be a great thing for dialysis patients... we could check our levels before we ate.. after we ate... we would know how to adjust our next meal... lol.. ahh.. that would be the greatest

(sry if this has been brought up b4...I didnt see it tho..)

Great idea.  That would be awesome to check P04 and K levels.  Then I would know what the culprit was.

Dark Cola has lots of P04.  Try and drink clear soda.  Pumpkin pie has both P04 and K.  I love the stuff, but only have a tiny slice at Thanksgiving.

They've got a home meter for iron now.  You can check that at home anytime you want.  Walmart sells them.

Hopefully, someone will come up with the PO4 version, soon.

If the soda was cola then it the soda and the liver.  Liver is sky high in PO4.  Roughly 340-400mg per 3 ounce serving.

I have soda every day, rootbear, I dont see no phosphorus in the ingredients... and I was told I could have it. Hmmm..  ??? As for the liver, I know its high n phos... but I have it once a month, so my dietician said its ok :| Its not something I have everyday... but yah, I only ate oe meal yesterday, it should of been fine. idunno.. ah well... I guess I will pay the price of an itchy night once a month to have something yummy.  :lol;  How many mg should we be eating roughl? I know each person is allowed a diff amount, but whats a nice neat number? You said per 3 ounce servicng, I had like a few pieces, small pieces.. as I dont eat much per meal, I graze all day pretty much. So I should of been ok.. hmm

I thought we could drink rootbeer??? Now im confused. LOL  I dont drink colas anyways tho, except the rootbeer cuz I was told we could... I drink orange soda, when I drink soda. As for K, I can have as much K as I want really cuz I dialyize everynight so my K stays normal and sometimes is low. Yay for orange juice.  :2thumbsup;

Rootbeer as long as it says no phosphorous is good.  A&W is the best.  Barqs has phosphorous in it.

Most patients are given a range between 800-1200 mg of PO4 a day.

It all depends on what you blood level is.  Do you know what it is?

A regular deck of playing card is considered the size of a 4 ounce portion.  So 3 ounces would be 75% of the size of a deck of cards.

You see...is hard to please my dietitian. Now I'm low on Phosphates....so now I have to drink cola, eat peanuts, cheese, milk, peas, beans...all the things I avoided for so long. I feel weird eating all that stuff and I'm not used to anymore. I don't want to add phosphates to my preparation because of my Chron's....so when I read all your troubles with the food I'm asked to eat I just feel weird.... :popcorn;

Blood level?? If I got a copy of my labs, what would I look for to get this information?

Yah, I hardly eat much at a time... especially of meat anyways... thats why my protein remains so low.. but im working on it.  :thumbup;

It should list what labs were tested and what the level was.  Some may or may not list the goal range also.

I suppose every unit tests different things but most should test the main stuff.

Test                               Your lab #                                                     Goal Range
BUN-                                     x                                                             50-100
Potassium                              x                                                             3.5-5.5
Albumin                                 x                                                             >3.7
Calcium                                  x                                                            8.5-10.1
Phosphorus                            x                                                            3.5-5.0
Hemoglobin                            x                                                          11.0-12.0

Thx BigSky!  :thumbup; That was so useful that I quoted you on my own forums (http://angiee1973.proboards42.com/index.cgi?board=labdiscussion&action=display&thread=1160744820&page=1#1160744820)!  :2thumbsup; Hope you don't mind :-[

Yes you can drink certain rootbeers such as Mugs like I do or A&W but NOT Barq's or Hires! Always read the lables! I have even found one Orange pop that has Phosphate and a Cream Soda! So read :) :2thumbsup; Some store brands are okay too!

That brings up a VERy important point! Fast Food Rootbeer! Some places sell Rootbeer that I thought was Phosphate-free through the drivethru because it just said Rootbeer but then inside I see it is a brand I can't have :( Opps!!  :o

Blood level?? If I got a copy of my labs, what would I look for to get this information?

angela - check out this web site - www.kidneyschool.org

Go to the Table of Contents, and Work thru Module #7 - "Understanding Kidney Lab Tests"

You can even print the results out and it will give you a space to write your own labs in for the next few months.

I will warn you that the modules are written for about a 7th grade education level, so the tone is pretty simplistic, and they are really, really, annoyingly upbeat through the whole set of lessons.  You also have to answer the little question boxes to get to the next page, so you can't just read it without participating in the lessons.  But the info is very helpful!
