Title: Catheter taken out and fluid retention
Post by: pwrightt on March 21, 2010, 06:22:19 PM
I'm new to this board so I welcome any suggestions. My husband was just taken off Home Dialyses. He
started first with the manuel exchanges but got peritonitis in the first week. Then was put on the Dialer. Was taken off that after a month as he was getting sever cramps and fluid over load. They made an attempt to put him back on the manuel exchanges but got peritonitis immedialtey again. So last week he's back on hemo. Ok Catheter taken out 4 days ago but was told just to change the bandage daily. But it seems like I should be doing more. Plus no one seems to be worried about the Peritonitis. But last night his back was killing him and now he has a fluid buildup. I feel lost right now? I just think he should be taking something for
the peritonitis and the Catheter hole is scarring me.

Poor guy, it sounds awful. I don't have any answers but if you haven't already seen this article maybe it will help:
"How Can I Treat Peritonitis and Can I Still Use Peritoneal Dialysis?" http://www.aakp.org/aakp-library/Peritoneal-Dialysis/

I did PD for over 5 years and when they took my cath out my hole was packed with a special dressing to make the hole heal up. Some doctors even stitch the hole up over here , but ive never heard of it just being left? You shouldnt be looking after it and changing dressings and if your hubby still has Peritonitis then that should be treated ASAP ! Get on to someone at the hospital and check whats going on, or see if you can get your hubby in to see the neph?

thank you for the replies. Got my husband in to to see his new doctor today. He is going to
look at all the test and go from there. He will see him again on Wednesday plus they did a hemo dialyses today and got a lot of the fluid pulled. As for the hole from the Cath today it looks way better. What a relief. In fact its almost closed completly overnight.
Once again thank you for the replies. We're both feeling a lot better tonight
