Title: What is adequacy?
Post by: -Lady Noir- on March 08, 2010, 11:14:23 AM
Hi there

Just wondering what exactly adequacy is, and how do they test for it? I know they get a 24hr urine and they ask for the dialysis fluid and such, just asking what is involved.

Cheers  ;D

Hi Lady Noir
Adequacy is how clean your blood is after dialysis. They take a blood test before and after dialysis and then  compare the 2 samples. The 24 hr urine test measures how much urine output is left and weather the kidneys are still filtering toxins out. I'm sure some one else will have a better description.

Oh.. because my partner never has the blood tests for the adequacy test. Is that only for Hemo patients? As my partner is on PD..

The way they do my Adequest is to collect a 24 hour urine sample, collect 2500 cc of my dialysate, and have labs drawn.  They only draw my blood once.  The PETAdequest, however, is the one where they draw the blood first, then dialyze you and then collect another blood sample.  The PETAdequest is done to determine if you are a high or low transporter.  What kind of a transporter you are can change over time.

Cheers for that.

Just confused, Mikes creatinine & urea have gone down, phosphate & calcium are perfect, potassium perfect, but they told us the adequacy test was not so good.
