Title: Hybrid dialysis?
Post by: bevvy5 on March 05, 2010, 11:58:00 AM
At least that's what the PD nurse that we talked to called it.  Greg is struggling along with hemo three times a week.  He has an appointment to get a new PD catheter in May - soonest they could fit him in, and will try PD.

We had a chance to speak with our PD nurse when he went in for the surgery consult, and we were saying that although the hemo just is sucking the life out of him and his labs are definitely not as good as on PD, he has much less edema in his legs.  She was saying that some patients are on PD and then go in just once a week to pull off extra fluid.

Does anybody here do that, or know what I might search for to get more info?  It sounds like it might work pretty well for us - allow us more freedom for travel, but almost too good to be true.

Of course, all this hinges on the hope that PD will work for Greg after the peritonitis and yeast infections he suffered a few months back.  But we're thinking happy thoughts.

Thank you in advance.

There was a patient at my center who did PD and then came in on Saturday and did hemo.  I dont know any details as I never really got to know him, but I always had the impression that fluid control was actually easier on PD.  But I am not an expert and am probably wrong.

I personally like the idea. I have been on PD for 2 and a half years now.  I went on hemo in Jan of 2009 and Jan 2008. Just the dialysis itself I like because it wasnt every single day, but dont like the lifestyle, and it did seem to take more  fluid off. I had wondered if I could possibly do both PD and hemo and they said no.
In fact I did get yelled at by a nephrologist for having both a PD cath and a hemo permacath, because it was two sources of infection.
If they let you do both dialysis they would probably push for a fistula instead of a permacath.
If they dont let you, it is so that you are not having to go through more surgery. It is more surgery to take a PD cath and put another one in. Then it is more surgery to get a graft or a fistula put in or fixed.

Make sense?

Hi All,  With regard to the hybrid question, I do it and it is definitely a great option!  I do PD 6 nights a week on the Baxter cycler and on Saturday night I go in for Hemo for 4 hours.   My clearances of the toxins are not quite good enough on PD alone, so my Neph supplements it with one Hemo treatment, but allows me to skip them for vacations and travel, as long as I do it most of the year.   This has been a godsend for us, as we have a small motorhome and love to go camping.  INMHO, it is the best of both worlds.
