Title: I'm always hungry
Post by: brmoore on February 28, 2010, 06:05:40 PM
I stick very close to the renal diet but always walk away from the table as hungry as I was before I ate. The size
restrictions on portions (e.g. 4 oz meat, 1/2 cup of this, 1/2 cup of that and 2 crackers) never satisfy my hunger and
I'm a small guy (140 pounds). Seems the whole meal is about equivalent to a normal size appetizer.
What do you do to avoid walking around hungry all day ??

hmm... every time I've talked to dieticians and everything they've given us has never had suggested sizes or limits.. just "EAT MORE PROTEIN!!" etc (I am on Dialysis) so I try and stuff myself full of as much meat as possible to get that protein up. The issue I have is trying to make sure that while I don't limit myself on how much I'm eating so much it's obviously WHAT I'm eating that is important - so I try and limit stuff with high potassium or phosphates, so that means low or no chease, tomato and considering if I had potato at one meal to keep the Phosphates down in the next, and so on - and of course low/no salt.

Being hungry is a sign of a higher albumin(sp?) which is a good thing :)

I'm not on dialysis yet, but having CKD4 means that I have all the restrictions of dialysis diets but also low protein.  I am very careful about what I eat to the point where I was just getting myself confused, so I saw my renal dietician, and she actually told me that I was being too hard on myself.  She said I could have a banana once a week, for instance, as long as I watched out for other high potassium foods and kept an eye on my labs.  Maybe you could experiment with having bigger portions and see what your next lab results tell you.  You may be restricting yourself more than you need to.

Me Too!!!! But, I dont gain any weight either, no matter how much I eat. I am also stage 4, and admittedly I do not strictly adhere to the renal diet. Advice from a good, and smart friend, everything in moderation. And my labs have been holding steady for well over 6 months. So far, so good.
P.S. Dont follow my advice, follow your Dr's advice. I am just saying this works for me.

I was restricting myself too much. It showed in the labs as well, even got my potassium too low and had to drink k-lite which is very grose and had to have potassium given via an IV.

According to the (U.S.) National Kidney Foundation:

You should be eating 1.2 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight.
140 lbs. = 64 kilograms, so you need to consume about 77 grams of protein a day.

How's you albumin level?

With longer treatment time you can actually eat more.

The NePro Drink really fills you up for hours. It is high in protein. You don't have to drink the whole 8oz.  Maybe just half.

Also, if you look in the store Ritz and Wheat Thins now have "Hint of Salt" which is like 35mg per serving compared to 120mg of sodium per serving.  You can have MORE!

my fiance stuffs himself to the gills with protein! he has to or when he gets sick (which is often) he wastes away. and when he is sick he drink dietician approved protein drinks. fortunetly his cholesterol is good so he can have tons of eggs which is good and an easy way for him to get protein. and i make meat every night for dinner. i didn't think food intake was limited except to certain foods. but they told him to eat as much protein as he can, and then eat more.

Fact: Men love protein

thats awesome that you have an appetite though! when Mario first came home from the hospital I only made him protein and then sat there and forced him to eat it. I was so tired of watching him shrink and be all pasty and gray looking.

Just be careful of the phosphorus while loading on the protein.  And always take the binders.
