Title: Why the change in prespiration ordor as kidney function decreased
Post by: Everlasting on January 05, 2010, 01:54:22 PM
Hello My Friends and wishes for comforts and wellness in 2010 !!  Please know you have been very much apart of Victor and my life this past year -- we are blessed.
     I have a question about the change in prespiration ordor which seems to be in keeping with kidney decline.  Any ideas?

Do you mean it's got better or worse?  I have found that I don't perspire at all since being on dialysis - unless it's a really hot hot day.  So I don't even bother with underarm or anything - I don't seem to need to.  Maybe cos all the fluid is being taken out via dialysis?  If your question is the other way round, then sorry, I'm not sure.

If you are noticing an ammonia smell, it's because the toxins the kidneys are no longer clearing are coming out through the skin every time it sweats.  The smell is strong enough to stay in clothes even after washing with regular soap.  Color safe and regular bleach is an absolute necessity.

Dialysis will help a lot - not so many toxins in the body then.

I agree with jbeany and monrein.  Sometimes I wonder where that odd smell is coming from, and realize it is me!  Ammonia smell bests describes it.

Toxins.  Toxins.  And Toxins.   However, I noticed that I hardly sweat at all pre transplant.  Also, mosquitos never bit me either.  I repulsed them.  bwaa ha haaaa!!  :rofl;

This may explain why my sister's cat goes nuts for my sweat (!?!?!). Whenever I visit her and have been walking with my backpack. Well when I walk I sweat onto my backpack's arm supports.... well I put my backpack down when I come to visit and her cat is all over it, licking the straps and going nuts. The other day he jumped up behind me and started licking my neck and cheek!! LMAO

So someone seems to like my toxins, as bizarre as that seems!  :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

Yes, I've noticed that on his day off, his sweat takes on an ammonia odor.  I can also smell it on his breath some days.

I get that, hubby hates it. I'm upto 2 showers and two sets of clothes a day at the moment cause PD isn't working and my kidneys are almost totally packed up. Somedays the smell is horrid. And my breath is shocking as well. Man, had a shower an hour ago and smell already

I have experienced this problem after my first kidney failure and the only thing I can add to the other suggestions is
to wear (assuming it gives no allergic reaction), natural fibres, like cotton etc against your skin.
Natural fibres and man-made-fibres affect people differently so one has to check this out,
but it would seem to me logical to wear something like cotton against the skin.
You may like to check out whether spicy foods, particularly hot spicy foods,
might exacerbate the problem, and if they do to avoid them.
Good luck from Kristina.

I'm a simple girl.  I love cotton!  Cotton and denim.  You can't go wrong.   :thumbup;

I've found poly fibres make the smell worse and tight tops.  singlets are good becuase they let your skin breathe a bit better (with a can of deodorant in the handbag). Also a small pack of wet wipes in the bag is handy for freshening up when on the run

I cannot stand tight clothing on me or anything not soft.
