We're under a blizzard warning in Iowa tonight. If the forecast holds up, and it really sounds like it will, I will not be able to make it to dialysis. This will only be the 2nd time in 8 years. I'm in relatively good health, so as long as I don't go nuts with fluid I will be fine, I'm sure. The center is 17 miles away. I'm supposed to be there at 5:45 am. The highway out of my town is a lower priority road to the DOT. Many winter days the road is not plowed or only plowed on one lane. As a night owl I hate my time slot anyway, but I really hate it in the winter. And don't get me started on the deer I have to dodge on the way in!
I have been known to get a hotel room a mile from my center, but this time I don't have the cash. With the timing of the storm, I'd probably need to go back to the hotel for another night after my run. I definitely can't afford two nights.
No question here, just a mild rant.

well, i certainly commend you on your attendance!! I always wondered about that stuff. We dont have snow issues, but hubby did have the flu and couldnt leave the bathroom area.. (if ya get my drift) He still pees and was fine, and im sure if you know and do what your suppose to do in this instance, you'll do ok too. Kinda scarry to be "absent" though isnt it. Just be safe, and be good! no cheating at this time!!

.I'm in the same boat. . weatherman says 6-8 in of snow and it's snowing now. My center just says to drive carefilly and call so they know I'm late. I have to go 30 miles. guess at 5 am we'll find out. Thank goodness for 4 wheel drive and cell phones!

Ya'll be careful. I've been hearing and reading about this storm all day. It has been raining cats and dogs here in GA and they say it will continue through the night. Good Luck.

I live in Massachusetts, which gets its share of snowstorms almost every winter.
So my dialysis center gave each of us a handout on emergency instructions. This included a list of emergency foods to have on hand in case of a power outage or difficulty getting to the supermarket; foods that are "legal" for a renal diet.
You may want to ask a dialysis nurse or your neph about this same issue--how to handle emergencies. Ask your neph flat out if you can miss a dialysis session without too much trouble, or if he would suggest special meds or a special diet till you can be dialyzed again.
Snowstorms aren't the only type of emergency either. It can be hurricanes, earthquakes, or even a major terrorist attack--anything that can disrupt your usual routine and usual modes of travel.

Just be sure to let the unit know that you can't make it because of the snowstorms (I know it would be obvious but you know some people are.. dumb) so you're not marked as non compliant or something for missing a treatment.....

Well it is 4:15 an. The power was out for 3 hrs! The snow has stopped but it is the wet heavy stuff and we have 5 in on our deck. It's going to be a messy drive.

Our center also did training on emergency procedures. We dialyze at home, but we are prepared for power outages and the inability for supplies to be delivered. Best idea is to be prepared.

Hope all goes well for you. I know how you feel. I had to miss a session last January (when I lived in Illinois) due to a severe ice storm. Worried me too, but I think you'll be ok. At least hope so. Let us know how you did.

Well the heavy snow stayed N of us. Driving was not a problem, just a little slower. Leave it to Mich weather though, it is now raining and raining pretty darn hard!.

When hubby was doing in center there were many days in the winter when he drove through 5 in of snow. Problem was when it was 12+ in of snow!!! Most times we went the night before and stayed at a friends. WE live in Newfoundland - an island in the North atlantic where the weather is often unpredictable. The forecast may say 5-10 cm of snow and we end up getting 30 cm!! We had a 4 x4 truck that e used in the snow. It was a little over an hrs drive to dialysis but there was one morning it took us 5 hours!!! We spent almost 3 hrs parked waiting for the snowplow!! We couldn't even get through in the truck - there was about 3 feet of snow overnight in that storm!!!

I almost missed my session today, because we couldn't get out of the driveway because of the snow! It's still snowing right now, and by the time it's all done we are supposed to have 14+ inches of snow. I only missed one session, and that way because my fistula infiltrated right away, and it was so bad, I needed to get a permacath inserted again the next day.
But we ended up getting out of the driveway. I was late though. My mom takes me, because we only live 3 minutes away from the center.

My husband was given a bottle of some "stuff",( potassium binder maybe?) to drink he ever missed due to emergency. Just for thought ask about this. I thought everyone got it

The weather can sure screw things up with dialysis schedules. Maybe a neighbor has a 4by 4 they can take you in?

Currently 38.6C (101F). I do not think we will get any snow here in sunny Melbourne. :rofl;

OK RichardMEL,stop showing off just because you are bathed in beautiful sunny, hot weather. How I envey you. We visited Melbourne on a trip of a life time about 7 years ago, and do you know what, it bloody rained for the 3 days we were there. It was a September/October, Melbourne cup week. I can see us now walking around that mining place wet through. Thanks for bringing back memories. Turkey still tastes better in cold weather. So there. Merry Christmas to you.

Melbourne Cup is the first Tuesday in November. October is usually our wettest month (which always seemed a bit strange to me!). Sorry it rained on you but we need all that rain now!! Dams only 37% full!
