Title: Loud Neighbors
Post by: Brightsky69 on December 02, 2009, 05:24:43 PM
I need to vent!!!!  I live in Virginia Beach and the neighbors on both sides have those loud illegal mufflers on their trucks. Now I already have major trouble sleeping. Most nights I don't get to sleep until 2 or 3 am. Both of these neighbors are in the Navy and leave for work at 5am. I can hear these obnixious mufflers at 5am and it wakes me out of what little sleep i am getting.
My boyfriend spoke to both neighbors and told them that I (me) have major trouble sleeping and that I am on life support and need what little sleep i can get and they are waking both of us up everymorning. My BF kindly asked if they could a little later in the morning.
The one neighbor said he would try parking down the street or at least take his wifes car to work....as it has a normal muffler.
When my BF told our other neighbor that his truck was waking us up and that I was on dialysis and was having trouble sleeping and had to start doing additional (manuel) diaysis the neighbor basically said..."What???she looks fine to me....she goes to work doesn't see?"  Like JUST because I drag myself out of bed to go to work so i can keep my health insurence - then accourding to him there is nothing wrong with me. I am doing all this on 2 hours sleep and thats no big deal to him. IGNORANT!!
This is war now. His muffler is ILLEGAL and if he doesn't change it then he is gonna get a visit from the cops everyday. This man is 51+ years old. He is not some 20 year old kid. Get a life dude!

Call the Navy, they do not want to have complaints about their members causing problems for the public, guaranteed they will do something.......

My next door neighbor goes to work at 430 am. For awhile he would tinker in his garage in the morning before leaving, dropping tools and banging around, right outside my window, which faces his garage. I would wake up and just lay there until he drove off, and I sometimes could not go back to sleep. It occurred to me that since he gets up so early, he must go to sleep early. So for 5 consecutive nights, at 10:30 PM, I opened our garage door (which makes a loud groaning noise) and I would reorganize stuff, drop tools, and drag the trash cans around, just like he did. Amazingly, he quit the early morning stuff (probably cuz he was so tired) and the problem went away.

These work very well in mufflers.

They make vehicles very quiet.  In fact if stuffed in the tailpipe properly, they will not start at all. ;D

The one neighbor who said he would drive his wifes car to work.....took off this morning in his big loud truck. They don't care so I say they are gonna start caring when the police start showing up.

My BF says he wants to give them time to fix the problem. In case we end up in court we can prove we did all we could.

Call the cops, when it is happening not later. If their response time is good they might be able to hear it not just you telling them about. They will have to catch them doing it to write the ticket. But making them aware of the problem will mean they might "make an effort" to catch your neighbors. Like patrol in your neighborhood at the times they regularly do this. Remember,"satifaction is giving a jerk a ticket."

My neighbors used to drive me crazy with late night parties every weekend.  You know what I did?  I started going to the parties.

We have security cameras on the front of the house. SO we do have them on film leaving at 5am.
But my officer friend told me that the police have to witness them leaving at that early hour.
He said a officer would come to the neighborhood at the 5am timeframe and watch them drive off. The first offense is $500 fine.

DW, your response was great!!

My neighbors have a dog that barks all the time.  I can't understand how he still has a "voice".  I turn a fan in my bedroom to help drown the sound.  I'm not sure if a fan would cover the muffles, but I guess its worth a try.

Contact their CO and explain the situation to them and the efforts you have made to resolve the problem and ask them to take the matter in hand.

Kit...I do have a shotgun.   >:D

In our bedroom we have an air purifer going all night long. We keep the doors closed too. Yet we can still heat them leave.
I remember one time I was in the shower and washing my hair with my head under the shower and i could hear the neghibor driving off on his Harley. Oh yes....did I mention the old neighbor has a Harley and he put a big loud muffler on that too. It wasn't even that loud when he first got it.

No progress -

We called the police, magistrate, courts, a lawyer and not a single person will do anything about the crappy A loud neighbors.  There is a noise ordinance in Virginia that no one will enforce. Thats GREAT!!!  VIRGINIA IS GREAT you can rape, murder, rob, and whatever crime you can think of and a judge will give you probation. OH you killed someone??? Oh ok...you get 1 year probation.....no problem. Oh you raped that little girl...she is a slut anyway...your free to go. It's no problem here whatever crime you want to commit your ok with us. Come on down!!!  WE DON'T ENFORCE ANY OF OUR LAWS ANYWAY SO WHO CARES!!!    :banghead; :stressed;

Sorry that you had this expirence.  Not knowing what reasons they might have had, I can only say this not how it is suppose to work.  Not all law enforcement people are like this, contary to what you have encountered.

If you called the police every morning at 5:30 for a week or two I am guessing they would eventually do something.

never give up.....   I had  or still have bad neighbors.... they were raising chickens in a resedential  neighborhood and was right behind my back yard.... Fighting chickens... all rooters  and roughly about 40 to 50 of them at various ages..... they did not cage them....they ran free and often in my back yard  makeing a mess.....   it took three years, signed petition from all the surrounding neighboors and the Zoning commission to get them to get rid of the chickens...  they  did   after  they had to go to court...... and now we all sleep all night and into the morning....

Dont give up....you just have to get with the right people.....  lots of pictures, video, and what ever other type of documentation you need......talk to your other neighbors and see if they also can help....you must not be the only one who hears the noise......

This sounds so difficult.  I agree with you..why have the laws if you won't enforce them. In CA you are not supposed to talk on your cell phone without a hands free device, you are not supposed to flick cigarettes out the window, you are not supposed to smoke with children in the car, HOWEVER, we see it all the time.

It's not like you can just pick up and move.  Is there anything you might be able to do like small claims court?  A lawyer? A restraining order (no those don't work, just makes people more angry).  Have them over for cake and coffee while you are on your machine?  How do the other neighbors handle it?  The problem with tinkering with anything they own (and I know most everyone was joking) is that is always seems to backfire.

What about some of the noise cancelling headphones?  They might be bulky but if they work it might be worth a try.  Please keep us informed of your plight.

Maybe you should get some chickens and let them roost at your neighbors.  :rofl;

Sorry, the frustration must be bad. I think I would blast my stereo at their house for 24 hours a day until I got arrested. I don't do well with rude neighbors. I get even.

If chickens wandered into my garden, they'd finish up in the oven.

OK, buying a chicken from the shop means you get one that's been plucked and drawn, so you'd have to do this yourself. Not such a difficult thing; when I was a kid, during and just after WW2, my parents kept chickens. They plucked them but got a neighbor to draw them.

One day my dad suggested I should watch the neighbor drawing the chicken. Next time we had a chicken, my dad said that now I knew how to draw them, I should do so.

I struck a deal. I didn't like to stick my hands into a cold chicken so I'd only draw them if they were still warm. I think I was about 6 at the time.

Hmm. Loud neighbors and dead chickens.....

Reminds me of the fish in the back seat in the movie Grumpy Old Men.

There MUST be some way to get even.  >:D >:D

Well...we have decided we are going to properly insulate the house. The housed in this neighborhood were built cheep. That is why we can hear the mufflers so loudly. The builders used some sort of Styrofoam and studs instead of wood. We are going to spend the money to properly insulate the entire house. We might also use soundproof drywall in the bedroom. We'll see how the insulation works first.
It's goning to cost a pretty penny but it should save us on the energy bill....the bedroom does get chilly in the winter.

For me, it's been difficult getting to sleep and staying asleep since I started dialysis. One thing that sometimes works is guilt. Like it or not, It's easy to actually say something to the culprits. Having a loud muffler isn't cool in any circumstance. Some people think so. To some people a loud muffler says. "I'm here! I'm cool!" Mostly these are unattached adolescents that are trying to get a mate, kinda' like a peacock and his plumage. Or maybe just trying to be cool in front of the other guys. Tell them that they're waking you up. Call the base commander. Call the police! I'm sure that there are laws that protect people from noise pollution. People that have loud mufflers tend to strech the limit. I'd bet that their sound is louder than the law allows. The police have detectors that measure the decibels, allowed by law. Of course not only will the perpetrators get a fine, but they will be ordered to have their mufflers silenced.
Don't cry, COMPLAIN! and Complain and complain. Just remember, some people like their loud mufflers so much that if there are complaints they might want revenge. Don't take the passive way out; no mater how cheaply your house is built the dam mufflers are TOO LOUD! I live in a mobile home and the guy that lives next door has a big diesel P/U truck. When he comes home the whole house shakes as if there is an earthquake. I leave earlier than he does. He comes home late shakes the house. There is no amount of mufflers that will muffel the noise that his stinkin' truck makes. On the other side there is a guy that demands only pre-emissions vehicles with big v-8s (Preferably with dual exhausts) He warms his vehicles up 365 days a year for 5 min. I can't say that either one is causing me to lose any sleep. I figure is I'm sleepy, I'll go to sleep no matter what is going on. People are strange when it comes to the amount of noise they make.
Anyway. . .

I don't know if this is still an issue, but if it is...

Do you have some kind of "In Your Corner" segment on any of the local news channels?  Contact them, tell them you have video of the neighbors, and how the police and Navy refuse to do anything.

There is still power in the press.

Drawing a chicken, in non-art terminology, means taking out the guts'n innards.  Sorry dw, I know you didn't want to be told but there you are, I couldn't resist.  Now maybe you "want" to hear about "hung, drawn and quartered" and we're talking people here, not chickens.
