Title: What did you have for Breakfast today
Post by: Dianejt on December 02, 2009, 09:04:50 AM
So I am trying to learn about the diet Frank will need to go on once he has his renal system removed.  I was so unhappy to read about no STARFRUIT with dialysis. Because he loves starfruit so much I went to the market & bought him one and told him to enjoy now because you can't eat them after. I was thinking about what am I going to feed him for breakfast once he needs to follow a diet. So please tell me what you had for breakfast.

Diane,
There are some things that you will just have to avoid (like starfruit) but for the most part it will be a matter of watching Frank's labs and adjusting what he eats accordingly. It gets easier once you get familiar with which foods are high in phosphorous and potassium.

My husband's labs are always very good. Sometimes his potassium is at the high end of acceptable, so he cuts back on orange juice.

Today he had this for breakfast:
granola, prunes, milk on his cereal, cranberry juice.

I am suppose to have breakfast?  Oops!   Seriously, the renal diet isn't bad, just moderation and watching you labs.  It will become routine after awhile.   :2thumbsup;

i'm not really the ideal patient, i don't actually follow any diet. I use the 'have a hubby' diet. Anything he is eating i have a bite of, that way i can still have a bit and not mess up my labs too much.

Being diabetic I have to eat breakfast. On "D" days I eat 1 breakfast burrito from McD's...hold the cheese! Not going to cook at 5am. Wish I liked oatmeal but  :puke; My chickens are laying about 1 doz eggs a week in this bitter cold. I like eggs and at least my protein levels are good! But I miss having grapefruit!!

I do, jump starts my day. Today is a dialysis (greeting from dialysis  :waving;) and I always eat oatmeal on dialysis days. Tomorrow is up for grabs.

Two cups (well mugs) of coffee

small container low fat fruity yogurt

1/2 Bagel  (sometimes with cream cheese)

I hate breakfast... anytime before noon that is.  Breakfast (Brunch) out noon or later Eggs Benedict or Scrambled Eggs with choriso.  But now Tyeflyl won't get that special surprise in the morning.

My boring breakfast nearly every weekday:

3/4 cup of blueberries mixed with GoLean and FiberOne, with soy milk. A cup of coffee to wash down the vitamins. That's it.

Weekends we have eggs or french toast or such.

nowdays, just decaf coffee unless early doctors appointment in the city, then it's McDonalds Plain Sausage McMuffin. Was never much of a breakfast person even as a diabetic unless I went out for breakfast.

If I have oatmeal, it has to be one of the flavored ones or cream of wheat (plain or fruit)

It is something you get to like.  The different brands definitely taste different.  I do not drink it straight although my daughter does.  She likes it that way.  It is really not that bad on cereal. Chris, I usually find at least one brand on sale at the different grocery stores I shop at.

Title: Re: What did you have for Breakfast today

i never used to be able to eat before 10 or 11 am. but since the onset of dialysis if i don't eat something within an hour or so of getting up i get sick. so today i had cheesy fried potatoes and a fried egg. now i'd really rather go out to breakfast instead of cooking. i usually have a small pot of tea too. sometimes i have cereal, but not oatmeal. the only thing oatmeal is good for is cookies.

My dietician suggested rice milk too.  She also suggest chocolate and cokes for my low pot and phos.  I took half of her advice.  Guess which half.

Ah but they have "instant" gritts now.  Packaged like instant oatmeal.  You can microwave them.  Never saw them though till I moved to North Carolina.
